University of Oregon football player LeGarrette Blount punched a Boise State Bronco player in the team's season opener. The school ultimately suspended him, but he was allowed to keep his scholarship and practice with the team.

Do you think Blount should be reinstated?

NO HE SHOULD NOT. He should be in jail for assault. What the hell is wrong with OSU assault is not bad enough what about robbery or rape would that get his scholarship revoked??? No wonder athletics think they are allowed to do anything with out consequences.

Ronald Boyd said:

Why wasn't Blont arrested for assault.

eugie blanchard said:

no, i don't think blount should be reinstated. he needs to be accountable of what he did during that game and what role would that show to other sports players? that it's okay to punch another player?

If a person feels that they can not compose themselves and have a sportsman like attitude when playing any kind of sport, they should be banned from play for the rest of the year. What Blount did was inexcusable and down right wrong. How would he feel if someone were to unexpectedly sucker punch him? I'm sure he would expect the same decision if he was in the other guys shoes.

Deborah Honeywell said:

I am a huge football fan, but enough is enough! If Blount is reinstated, it sends the message to all (including children)that there are two sets of standards. One, rules for law abiding citizens, and two, rules for those who choose to break the law, with only minor consequences.

Can you say sick society?

PJ Wray said:

No he should not be reinstated. He should not even be allowed on campus until his suspension is served. He should have been arrested by the campus police.

Steve Brannigan said:

Its hard to believe that a University will, justifiably, suspend a player for the season for an act of violence during a game but to reinstate him only a few weeks later? I was amazed at the mere suggestion of people wanting to take his scholarship away for what he did. But now I'm wondering if they knew something I didn't.

Mike Swanson said:

No way, It was a serious thing he did, and he is lucky that the other player was not permanently hurt.

tlrucker said:

Of course he should not be reinstated! If it was my decision he would not only be off the team, including pratice, etc., but he would also loose his football scholarship for this school year.

Mike Hughes said:

Duh, NO!. But the obvious answer doesn't matter when the almighty buck is involved. College football brings in lots of money, and a winning team brings in more. He would help the team win. You do the math. Sickening.

Mike Hughes said:

In our country, it all comes down to the almighty buck. He will help the team win. That will help to bring money into the university. Sickening. No, he should not be reinstated. But probably will be.

CyrixLord said:

As this incident proves, sports is about winning, not accountability. who cares if you're a jerk like Vick, as long as you can throw a ball worth a darn, and can bring in some income, someone will always sponsor you!

Suppose this young man that got hit WAS YOUR SON.

The pain from that assault could last for years. Both mentally and physically.

The responsible party does not belong in college sports. This is the type of person that will sooner or later in lfe wind up in jail, maybe for murder.

I'm disgusted at the university for wasting a scholarship on this person when there are so many more deserving people out there.

Do they really need a football player that bad.

Gordon Wallace said:

We are not in a position, to make that decision, but if he does what the coaches tell him and follows all the rules and regulations, why not re-instate?? How ever, although I believe every one deserves a second chance, if this was to happen again. I would have to say NO. We have to draw the line, violence is not an option. make no mistake that was a violent out break.

Michael said:

NO - unacceptable unsportsmanlike conduct. His whole life growing up in sports he should know this is unacceptable. The sport should not take a chance on him again, and should not let anyone anywhere think it can be tolerated. A person has to accept the consequences of his actions, even if he might be remorseful later.

Kelly Hudgens said:

This guy should be in jail for assault. NO he should not be reinstated. He should at least have had his scholarship revoked.
Academic scholarships should not be awarded on the basis of athletic ability. Certainly they should not be retained when the athlete is an uncontrolled idiot!

Bob Ryan said:

No. Authorities should press charges for assault.

John Hall said:

NO - HE SHOULD NOT. He should be in jail for assault. (as another poster said)

Andrea Thompson said:

I am disheartened to hear that Coach Kelly is considering a reinstatement of the suspended player, LeGarrette Blount. It seems to me that Coach Kelly is showing his player and all the others that his actions were excusable. Exonerating him sends the message that Coach Kelly doesn't stick to his word and players don't have to abide by the consequences of their actions. Reversing the decision only exposes weakness & teaches the players that rules are made to be broken. It should be acknowledged that Blount did the right thing by providing an appropriate apology, however, that does not mean he should not still be held responsible for his actions.

Cary Decker said:

Blount Should be permently bared from any sport.
He has a mental problem that needs to be addressed.

Mike Polson said:

Hi,

I don't feel Blount should be able to play football or practice with the team until next football season. He should keep his schoarship and it should be on probation until next year as well. This will send a positive message though out the collge sports.

Thank you,
Mike

Carole said:

He should NOT be reinstated. Since he is mentally unbalanced enough to attack someone on the football field, he will eventually take out his aggressions by assaulting others off the field, including at the University. He needs rehab in a facility where he cannot harm others.

Reinstate Blout? NO. In jail for assult? Yes

Its about the money! NFL scouts go to college games and he wants an NFL chance.... This isn't rocket science, folks. Having players going to the NFL also gives a good image to the college and therefore better recruits.....and more winning games. More winning games mean more chances for bowl games and more money to the university.

I believe the University of Oregon is setting a very bad example - especially in a society where we now justify all of wrong doing; there are no circumstances. How are young people suppose to learn? By consequences...every good parent knows this. We care about this young man - but this was certainly a poor decision by University administrators.

Blount should not be able to play for at least 1/2 the season - period! He must learn to control his temper and learn by his mistakes.

If I had some opposing player tapping me on the shoulder and taunting me after his team beat mine, I'd probably punch him also.

Don said:

He shouldn't have been suspended for the season to start with. In football, dirty plays and illegal hits happen every play. If you don't believe this, ask any football players, even in high school. If it wasn't on TV, there wouldn't have been the controversy. I originally thought 9 games should have been the max - his entire year, and, effectively, his entire productive life was effectively ended. Football is a very emotional game, played by guys who have always been encouraged to take down/out their opponents. He just went too far. But, if he can learn from this, he may become a better person in the long run. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

Harold Olsen said:

Not only should Blount NOT be reinstated, he should go to jail. By reinstating him it's sending the message that if you are a sports star or a celebrity of any kind you can do whatever you want and get away with it. There are no consequences. The person he punched should also sue him for everything he can get. Blount not only should not be reinstated but he should NEVER EVER be allowed to play football again, either in college or the pros or even the sandlot. It's crap like this why I will not watch sports or support them in any way. The majority of players are nothing but a bunch of whining, spoiled and childish prima donnas who deserve absolutely no respect of any kind. In all sports, criminal charges should be mandatory for behavior such as this.

NO!!!

Dan Blankenship said:

I agree with the majority here. He should not be reinstated. He should be arrested for assault. There needs to be equal penalty for people regardless of them playing a sport or not. I would however find it funny if a golf punched another golfer for talking trash.

Rick said:

Please get your schools correct, he was from the University of Oregon not Oregon State. As far as I'm concern he should stay off the team, be held accountable for assault, and loose his scholarship.

It's time the Universities stop catering to these bullies just so they can ensure alummni funding.

kevin wilson said:

What is wrong with assault? In fact, if you can't run fast enough to catch and tackle someone, why not just shoot them in the back?

Craig said:

Reinstated? What the Hell is this? Wow this only speaks volumes about the integrity of the Oregon Athletic program! Suspended for the season means for the entire season!!!

Chris said:

No. He committed assault. That is a crime in most states. He avoided that because the victim was kind enough to not file charges. Oregon's excuse will be that he deserves a second chance, but their real reason is that they want to win football games. bottom line: No accountability, which instills the concept of "I can get away with anything because I'm an athlete." Review the story of UW's Jeremy Stevens. He got away with rape because he was a star football player.

Diane said:

No, he should not be reinstated. Kids look up to these guys, copy their actions, copy their words. This guy is a bully and should not be allowed to play football. "suspended for the season" what a JOKE! Grow up Oregon! A football season is not as important as taking a stand against violence, violence against ANYONE.

NO HE SHOULD BE IN OREGON STATE PRISON. THINK ABOUT IT OSU. ENOUGH SAID...
