A judge in Kent, WA, has ruled that a teachers strike in the Kent school district is illegal, and is ordering the teachers back to work next Thursday. Do you agree with the judge's ruling, and should they be forced back to work? 18 CommentsLeave a comment |
What use is it to have a union if they can legally be forced back to work. I hope they keep the strike going for the principal of the thing.
I for one think this is ridiculous. The district has bullied the teachers for years now, and the moment the teachers fight back, they are sent back to work. I feel the judge made a poor choice, and I feel the district is getting away with way too much.
As a high school student, it's always nice to get more time off, but I'm more concerned with the teachers rights.
I believe teachers should be forced back to work because their strikes are getting in the way of the kids education. Kids are supposed to go to school and learn, not to watch their teachers on t.v having a strike.
The law is very clear and says that public employees (which include teachers) cannot strike, so the judge had no choice but to force the teachers back to work. The teachers still can decide to defy the injunction (which I think they should) and risk being fined, fired or even jailed. But, it would be very hard for the courts to prosecute 1,700 teachers.
Why have a Union then. We are becoming more Socialists ever day. There is more involved than just wages. With our population and technology advancing, we need more teachers, books and supplies. I don't see why the State has a problem with since they want to raise our children anyway.
Yes, the law says it's illegal for them to strike, and judge also told them to get back to work. THAT'S ALL SHE WROTE.
The answer is no. The teachers are striking for the best interest of the students and their effective education. They're the experts, not the district or the judge.
Let them strike, fools. Because this is just a little matter. Didn't the goverment tell you yet? The swine flu will kill the half of the population world wide. Home owners. You think your house value will climb back up??? This winter, all the builders of new houses and condos will dump them in 'giveaway' price. That means your house value will drop much much further. These days, you see all the commercials saying they'll buy gold from you, right. That means the money's value will drop dramatically, so all the rich jews are busy collect as much gold as they can at a cheap cheap price. IT WILL BE A F#$KING CHAOS! AND IT WON'T END!! Wuahahahahahhahaha! I feel sorry for those who thought Obama would fix any of these!! Well, it's not his fault. It's just the end of the world. That's all.
I believe that legislature needs to act. They need to make it legal for teachers to strike. Of course this should be done with some limitations. But giving the power only to the district isn't ok as the "common law" does. Both sides need rights and protections in their employment rights. I hear a lot of people complain about how the economy is bad and they should be happy to have a job. And they are, but it doesn't give the right to a employer to treat them poorly. KSD needs to think of my children's future. And the fact they changed the time of their board meeting and closed early when the found that parents and students were coming shows their true colors.
I can name a few people who aren't going to be re-elected. And I hope Vargas enjoyed his short time here.
NO dont force the poor teachers back to class. just hand out pink slips (not hall pass type) and get new teachers.
If the money and workeing area is so bad than they need to go find a new job that better suits them (good luck finding a job)
People in Western Washington need to wake up Boeing will be moveing soon and the job market will dri up.
As a Kent student I look at both sides with different point of views. Though many people look at this from the "send teachers back" perspective, many people need to take a moment to think about the people who educate the students of Kent. Sending the teachers back forcefully would not do any good but stir up the mess. Instead of negotiating with eachother, each side is behaving in a way where NOTHING will get done. Students of Kent have had our summer. We're ready to come back to school; But we support our teachers 100%.
I have said for many many years that the labor unions will be the ruination of this country.
Just walk through any retail store and look at the country of mfg. I get so excited I can hardly stand it when I see something made in USA. Most items are outsourced to foreign countries because labor has priced local goods and services out of the compatetive market place. Mr Goodwrench Obama bailed out 2 major auto manufacturers. Yet who had greatest sales during the "cash handout for clunkers" program of the big three? Ford. Does that tell you something? Somewhere down the line, the question will arise, who will bail out the school districts when they are bankrupt. Oh I forgot, we bail out the schools from sales tax revenues generated by by all those items made in foreign countries. Tell the teachers to get off their duff, get back in the class room and be glad that they have a job. If they don't outsource the teaching assignments to Bangladesh.
Just get rid of them and bring in new teachers. They knew what the were getting into when they became teachers and now they don't like what they signed up for.
I believe certain groups of workers should not strike at all. This includes teachers, the police, firefighters, and medical professionals. These individuals provide a need that not only is generally paid with taxpayers' dollars, but is essential and should not be disrupted.
I am very proud of the fact that of the comments left here, the most articulate, intelligent, thoughtful and GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT were left by Kent students. Things that make you go, hmmmmm...
They should go back to work. Teachers should stop complaining and go back to work. Extra work should be expected.
If they don't go back they should lose their jobs and the union goons should go to jail
If the we (teachers and the district) want to make a difference we need to hold the students to a higher level of excellence and not think that smaller class sizes and money will change things. exceptance of a C average to graduate from school will only make the majority of students try for a C. Kids are smart. Expect more from them. They will deliver, large classes or not.
What a wierd day... our schools don't show a video by the President of the US, (elected by the people) telling kids to work hard in school and never quit (someone explain why please)... and our teachers are defying a judges orders telling our kids jail isn't so bad.
Wow don't we have a few of our messages mixed up?
