Two Oregon parents are on trial for manslaughter. Prosecutors say the couple choose prayer over medicine to save their 15 month-old daughter, who died from pneumonia and a blood infection. The parents say they don't believe in medical treatment. These people should not be prosecuted by the law because this is obviously an example of evolutionary natural selection at work. If we just leave them alone, eventually they will eliminate themselves from the gene pool, to the greater benefit of us all.
Yes, they should face Criminal Justice, as well as the church for false teachings. God gives man great scientific knowledge to formulate medicines to fight all sorts of diseases, such as this baby had. We, as parents, have been given by God, a huge responsibility to our children to care for them when they cannot make sound decisions for themselves. When Judgement day comes, we will have to give a personal accout of how we managed our children by the choices we chose for them. I'm sure if this baby had a choice, she'd chosen the medications rather than to suffer and die at the hands of her parents & church.
I believe that Doctors are not evil. They are put on this earth and given knowlage to help heal. Yes, I believe that Jesus heals if you have the faith for it. But if my son was sick, I would pray that the doctors would have the wisdom and be guided by God for his healing.
Of course they should be prosecuted. Cults are so last century. And of all the 'medical miracles' that have been claimed and associated with prayer, how many amputees have been healed? None! Does God discriminate? The bible says he doesn't and the bible is the word of god! but the only proof of god is the bible.. hm.....

Leave them alone. We abort babies, use euthanasia on the elderly, but if someone has a 'faith' and their child accidentally dies, we prosecute them? WRONG. There was no intent to kill, unlike abortion and euthanasia.
Well, whether these people actually read the bible or not, let me make this very clear. Jesus never liked stupid or lazy people. And this crazy case is exactly why!

Innocent children should not have to pay with their lives for their parents stupidity and superstitions. These people should be prosecuted and probably executed.

I hardly go to hospital, and I hardly use medicine. Not because of my religion but because of my martial arts belief. But will I insist that belief for my children's health? I don't think so.
ok so if its ok to not take your kids to the doctor because of your religion why shouldnt the non religious have the same rights?

there shall be no reason why a parent shouldnt choose the safety over their child over prayer. Theyre not God especially when the infants young the freedom of religion shall never be a role factor in this matter. Manslaughter fits the mommy murderer to the tee she deserves it without the death penalty. if you give her death she well be getting what she wants. that baby didnt get a choice why should she? Should they be prosecuted if they use the AMA belief system and the child dies?
As a mother of three young children, I cannot imagine not seeking the necessary medicine for a sick child when it is readily available. God has given us the wisdom to make these medicines, so why not use them when needed?
They have now suffered their own consequences:
the death of their own baby.
I think we should prosecute their church for wrongful death.
Any parent who causes the death of a child because of their religious (superstitious) beliefs should be prosecuted for murder. This country has made far too many concessions to religious beliefs. Where does it stop? This is the twenty-first century - we no longer allow the sacrifice of virgins based upon religious beliefs and we shouldn't allow parents to sacrifice their children for those same beliefs.
It was not an accidental death it was just sraight neglect. A toddler does not have all the immune shots it needs, so when a parent does not seek mdical attention to a toddler, alls it is is just neglect to a childs medical needs.
No they should not be prosecuted. If they take away the rights of freedom of religion ours is next.
A little one like that can be very sick before you even know that they are in trouble. When our baby was small, she showed no sign of being sick. She was happy, not a bit fussy, just a tiny cough that sounded like she had something in her throat. I did take her to the Dr. having no idea that she was in serious trouble until we arrived and the nurse told us to take her to the ER. The Xray that was done then showed that she had pneumonia and the Dr. said that she could have died overnight.
When you have no medical background, have not dealt with this kind of serious illness, and you have no basis to make an informed decision in regard to a child who seems to have a cold, but not acting seriously ill, it may be impossible to know what to do. Prosecuting the parents who believe that they have done all that they knew to do, is a crime in itself!
Their faith should not be the issue in this case! It seems that making their faith an issue is a way to undermine their belief, and legislate our right to choose our faith.

When it involves innocent children, everything should be done to save their lives and protect their health. I believe that doctors have God-given skills and are part of the answer to prayer for anyone.
If the court determines that they are guilty of manslater, then all parents that choose partial birth abortion should also be prosecuted. This is the parents choice over the life of an inocsent child.
Freedom of religion is all well and good until someone is hurt, especially a child. These parents killed their daughter… they watched her die. Hiding behind their God is no excuse for murder. Period.
"Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Hapiness" is in the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution. "Religous Freedom" was added later as the First Amendment. The Supreme Court is charged with determining what the "founding fathers" had in mind when they established the Constitution. It seems obvious (to me, atleast), that "LIFE" was a pre-eminant consideration and that all other "rights" are subordinate to that.
No, They are loving their child in best way that they know. Prayer is not just waiting and seeing what happens... at least in my religion. It is action. Neglect is one thing; a wait and see thing is not loving when a child is in distress, but an active prayer is Loving your child and expecting immediate progress.
How many children die from medical treatment, mistakes from hospitals, and all kinds of things that drugs do to children? Are all of these parents brought to trial for their faith in the doctors and medicine? No, because you are doing what you feel is the most loving. You will blame the doctor, hospital, or God for a death of a child instead. These parents on trial are just going to God first I suspect. I do not know their religious faith, but don't you think that they are in a Huge amount of pain from the death of their dearest child when they were doing what they believe was the best for her? My heart goes out to them.

How about a compromise? All children who present symptoms of any sort of disease or illness ought to have a once-over by a doctor. From there, if the treatment isn't completely necessary, the parents have an option to say no; if the illness is life-threatening or requires immediate treatment, then the option cannot be waived. That way there is a choice in all but the most severe of cases - plus the choices can be widened when the child reaches, say 14 or something.

All of this notwithstanding, I think that it is cruelty to children to fill their heads with their parent's superstitions. Of course, if the parents, being adults, want to refuse medical treatment for themselves, it should be their right. However, there should be a legal requirement for all parents to obtain medical care for their children, and not rely on mumbo-jumbo, including "laying on of hands". Eventually, these cultists may die out!

People who withhold medical care for their
children are not doing as God says. Life is
precious.
I think that until a child is old enough to be able to make adult decisions, until they come of age at 18, then the parents - regardless of their religious beliefs - she be required by law to provide legally recognized medical care to their children. Failure to do so should be tantamount to assault if the child is injured, and manslaughter or murder should the child die. Religious beliefs are all fine and good, but when it threatens the life of a child, regardless of the faith, the parents should be held accountable.

The parents DELIBERATELY WITHHELD MEDICAL CARE due to their religious beliefs. If you were bleeding to death at my feet, and I refused to call 9-1-1 because I knew they would require me to provide you with *gasp* medical care, which is against my religion, would you be as forgiving? Either way, you'd be just as dead.
Don't be a putz. There's no "accidental" here. It's all intentional, you're just too blinded by the Bible to see it.
Abortion, euthanasia, failure to provide medical care...these are all INTENTIONAL ACTS! Be they murder, manslaughter, or just bad judgment is up to the laws of the individual states. Faith is irrelevant in these cases, because dead is still dead. Grow up and get a clue.
I can't understand why the jury is hung. This is pretty cut and dried to me. Who speaks up for this little girl's life that was so unfairly snatched from her due to IGNORANCE, IGNORANCE, IGNORANCE. These people should be found guilty of manslaughter at the very least. They failed as parents to use all resources available to them as Americans to keep this child safe. This is NOT a religious issue. This is a victim's rights issue.
What happened to the "separation of church and state" that is continually brandied about?
Why does the state on one hand claim it is perfectly legal to murder the unborn solely based upon the mother's wishes but on the other hand consider charging the parent's with murder effectively claiming the parent's have no right to practice their religion while also claiming the state has the sole right to pick and choose which humans it will protect and which humans it will not protect?
Sigh, had the parents only murdered the baby while still in her mother's womb, they would be heroes instead of villians.
Those parents are GUILTY! Doctors were put on this earth for a reason. I feel that they got away with murder. Is there ever going to be justice for the most innocent of lives? The Worthington couple should have been found guilty & should have been given the death penalty to be carried out immediately after sentencing. I have NO SYMPATHY for baby rapers, child murderers, sex offenders of any kind. They all deserve the "Mandatory death penalty to be carried out immediately after sentencing. Appeal process is not an option." To bad this isn't a Federal Law. Our prisons wouldn't be overcrowded like they are now.
Those parents should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law...They should be treated as murderers and spend the rest of their natural lives in prison...Neglecting a child's health because of religious reasons is a cop out for not wanting to seek medical attention...We need stiffer sentences for people that commit crimes...They should not be elligible for parole if they are sentenced for murder...
I am a proud perent of three and love my children unconditionally. These people are sick and twisted to try and use religion as a reason for neglect. This has nothing to do with abortion the people bringing up that issue are just pathetic. How could anyboby that has any morals whatch thier child suffer and die? I would do anything to ensure the well being of my children including giving my own life withuot hesitation to save them. Pray that this little girl is in a far better place then her perents ever provided.
