What do you think of the court's decision to issue a stay of execution for Cal Brown? Brown is a convicted murderer and was set to die by lethal injection at 12:01 a.m. Friday. His execution is on hold until the question of whether lethal injection is a form of cruel and unusual punishment is settled in court. 25 CommentsLeave a comment |
This is Washington State! Did you really expect someone who deserves to die get what he really deserves? Not now, not ever...
It wouldn't matter what the process for execution was because the real issue is not wether it is cruel or unusual. The real issue is that this inmate, who admits he tortured, raped and killed his victom, doesn't want to die. No other issue but that he doesn't want to die. I'm sure that his victom didn't want to die either. The matter of lethal injection being cruel and unusual. kind of ironic that this is his only defense now. Did he start an iv in his victom and give her a medicine so that she wouldn't feel her torture and rape. nope he sure didn't but that's what he is going to get. He won't be awake. He won't feel pain. he'll just go peacefully and that will be that. He'll probably even get a nice burial, paid for by the state. how did he treat his victom when it came time to bury her? He deserves alot more than he's going to get and there is no question that he did it because he admits to it.
fry him
The real issues is: this is the law.
Perhaps if our stupid voters didnt elect stupid politicians who pass stupid laws, this wouldnt happen.
It's the Law! He's been in jail for 18yrs and NOW he decides to appeal to the courts as the injection is cruel. Someone tell that to the victim's family.
This is rediculous as well as the Board who voted 2-2 that advises the Governor of their recommenation.
He did it. He admitted it. He made the wrong choice, let the State make the RIGHT CHOICE! Injection.
The state has the death penalty. If lethal injection is cruel, then let's hear "other" ways or means for death, and vote on it. Until then, follow the law.

What is the big deal after 18 years in prison he is now scared of a needle, looks like he is scared of a razor too. This guy is slime, strap him on the table plug him in and let the juice flow.
The tragedy is the death penalty itself. It raises false expectations of resolution for the family of the victim. And it creates huge costs for the state, both financial and moral.
"Breaking News" Holly Washa and her family are asking for a stay of her car jacking, kidnapping, assault, rape, and murder. Oh wait, what non-criminals in this state want doesn't matter. Washington's lax attitude toward crime should really worry its citizens. Especially with economic times getting worse. If they won't execute a murderer what won't they do when people start breaking into houses, robbing banks, and stealing cars to make ends meet as we continue to feel the crunch of these economic times? Crime has no deterrent in Washington and it's only going to get worse.
I believe a person can forfeit their life by choosing to commit certain acts.
The acts that deprived Holly Washa of her life would fall under that category, in my opinion. Cal Brown has been a walking dead man for 18 years - it just hasn't yet been fulfilled in his flesh. The state does not 'punish' him. It carries out physical end result of the forfeit.
When we "put dogs to sleep" it's considered humane. If it's humane enough for dogs who have never hurt a soul, it ought to be humane enough for a human who.
....has done the things this man did.
It's been hard enough for the family & friends. Cruel & unusual punishment? Tell that to the victom. Oh that's right, she's dead. Tortured, slashed throat, stabbed, strangled, raped several times.
How much HELL was she in before he decided he was done?
If it was my daughter, I would make him pay in the way he made my daughter suffer.
Get it over with!
First and foremost, I have lost all faith in the judicial system. I have a couple of simple, common sense, and what I believe to be reasonable points that must be made on this case.
1.) There are thousands of people living with bipolar disorder who do not go out and brutally rape, torture and kill someone. When are we going to stop making convenient excuses for people who brutalize and kill people (mostly young women and children)? I really want to know when this society is going to stand up and put a stop to this injustice in our system.
2.) People get really mixed up about forgiveness and justice. Just because a person asks to be forgiven does not mean they are absolved of facing the punishment for their crime. By Washington State law Cal Brown was convicted for the horrible crime he perpetrated against a beautiful young 22 year old woman. He was then sentenced to death according to the laws of Washington. He needs to face "his" punishment for the crime "he" committed. Being forgiven has to do with his eternal life and not his mortal life. I'll say it again, so this message hits home, it does not absolve him of being punished!!!!!!
3.) I would like the luxury of picking and choosing which laws to follow, but then that would defeat the whole purpose of our legal system. We must have a system of laws and these laws must mean something. At this point, the justice system has failed in my opinion, by the Supreme Court stepping in and giving Cal Brown a stay. I have absolutely no faith in the Washington State Justice system. I'm forever more going to refer to it as the Washington State "Injustice" system. Rip off that blind fold lady justice because it ain't nothing but a lie. There is no justice in Washington State for victims. There are only excuses to get brutal murders like Cal Brown excused from facing the justice he deserves. The Washington Supreme Court needs to do their job and follow through on Washington State law.
4.) On the issue of lethal injection being a humane form of death. I believe it's similar to going to sleep and not waking up. Well, when my time comes I can't think of a more calm way to die then laying down, going to sleep, and not waking up. I watched my elderly father slowly waste away and die for a year and half. I'll take lethal injection any day of the week over his slow form of death or that of Holly Washa's brutal torturous death. Please explain to me if there is any more humane way to die than lethal injection. I can't think of any.
5.) Finally, when the vast majority of people lose faith in the legal system, then it is only a matter of time before chaos reigns. Each time the Supreme Court in this state or Supreme Courts throughout the land make these types of decisions they chip away at the fabric of our society. I believe that only through a strong legal system and a body of law can we maintain a healthy and vibrant democracy. The Washington State Supreme Court has struck an awful blow against our legal system, democracy, society and our faith in justice.
Call me absolutely disgusted!!! I'm trying desperately hard not to use profanity. I'm not very proud to be a Washingtonian these days!!
Angry and very disappointed in the WA Supremes. May God pass swift and immediate judgment on those who failed to execute justice for Holly.

Since the court decided to stay/delay the execution, wouldn't it be nice if the convicted murderer was turned over to the members of the court who voted for the delay. They would have sole custody for the duration of the delay and would be completely responsibe for his security, housing, food, and any medical needs. And of course if they did not treat him adequately he would be completly within his rights to sue them for any perceived lack of proper care. He would stay in their homes and interact with members of their families for the length of the delay they granted. How much money has already been wasted in delaying this execution for 18 years?
He get's a chance to vote on the death penelty! what choice did the victim have!
My opinion on this matter is that the supreme court's decision to issue a stay of execution is the most rediculous thing I've heard. Did the idiot stop and think for one moment when he
engaged in his sadistic act back in 1991?? I don't think so! Did it ever dawn on him that what he was doing was a CRUEL AND UNUSUAL punishment?? I'm SURE he never even gave it a second thought!
What I would really like to know is, what apparent reason is there to issue a stay...Sanely speaking, there aren't any! To begin with, WHY did it take so long for his potential execution in the first place??
What MANY individuals have said and are still saying about the judicial system being in favor of the criminals is SOOOOOO TRUE!! What the state court system should do now is to reimburse the victim's family for ALL costs incurred for their travel to Walla Walla, IF they are claiming the reason for the postponement is in all fairness to the idiot.
What they SHOULD do is, show fairness to the victim's family afterall they are the ones who lost their innocent loved one. I hope the court system will give this matter a more sensible thought and come to a wiser decision.....Execute the bastard, instead of making lame excuses for him!
Does it really shock anyone that one of the most liberal supreme courts in the United States repeatedly grants these stays? It shouldnt. Scumbag Brown had is "day" in court. 12 jurors after hearing the facts chose his punishment, death. Scumbag Brown had his "day" again. 18 years of appeals and one by one they were rejected because the facts were indisputable. The alimighty supreme court thinks the rest of us are morons and the 12 jurors and judge who decided Scumbag Brown's fate are morons as well. Its just unfortunate that activist judges continue to stand in the way because of political agendas. Scumbag Brown deserves to die. ITS THE LAW.
Its time to pluck away those supreme justices that do not uphold the laws of the land. Rapist and murders who visciouly prey upon our children, have forfeited their right to live. Swift justice is what the families of the victims want. To waste our tax payer money on housing and feeding these monsters, is absurd to say the least. To have protestors against capital punishment, means they or their families have not suffered the wrath of these viscious evil criminals. Lethal Injection - is nothing compared to the horror, pain and unbearable torture these victims have suffered. We have hundreds of serial sexaul predators caged, and our office officials have the nerve to release them into our society every year, as they continue to spread fear upon our families, roaming and preying upon our children every year...near our homes, near our schools!! AMERICA WAKE UP! WE ARE A SLEEPING GIANT BEING CHIPPED AWAY BY MONGLERS!
Holly was a friend of mine. What chance did he give her. He's had 18 years. Oh ya he gave that time while she laid in the trunk of her car while he got his plane ticket, before he slit her throat.
I know it won't bring her back and it may or may not ease any of their pain but if Holly's family wants her murderer executed...so it should be.
Ref: Cal Brown and others. Their victims where treated crul and inhumane! The "Browns" of our society need to be treated/excuted the same way their victims where treated with extreme prejudice! Hey People/Judges/Govenors,etc...Wake up! Why should "I/We/Taxpayers" pay to house, feed these people for the rest of their lives?! I suppose the "Browne(s)" will not get what they deserve untill they kill or mame your/their family member(s)? I/We are tired of the "Browne(s)" preying on us! Texas has the Death Penalty "And they use it!"
it's a shame that the United States courts can't make up there minds when it comes to taken care the punishment it gives to people of crimes. we need to start carrying them out because the victim's never had a chance to choose how they were killed.
when a person has admitted to a crime like this then they should be killed right away with out a second thought about if it will hurt them and how slow they will die, because that should have been something they should have thought about before doing the crime. kill him and due it today so i can save some of my tax dollars from keeping them alive for so long.
Cruel and unusual punishment..? Oh, and what he did to that poor girl was un-cruel and fair treatment, right..?
C'mon now Supreme Court, kill the guy, that is why we voted in the Death Penalty, for scum like this. For he revoked his right to live and breathe on planet Earth!
He was found guilty. He admitted to doing the crime. The penalty is death by lethal injection. Lethal injection could also mean death by lethal injection of a high speed lead slug right between the eyes.
The public needs to start standing up for the law and stop the courts from allowing such nonsense to go on. You can thank the communist backed ACLU for this.
I used to believe in the death penalty. Than one Sunday morning in Sunday School,we had a discussion.
It was brought to my attention this thought. Is execution bringing an individuals life to an end on God's time or man's time. God can forgive even the worst of sins. If we execute a person before he (she) has a chance to come to this realization and make amends to God, are we sending this person to an eternity of punishment. The bottom line was, if a person is committed to life in prison, they have all time available given by God to seek his forgiveness. If you don't buy into this, that's OK, because someday we will all stand before our creator and one of us will be right.
Mr D.
As a Christian, I've just got to respond. Cal Brown has been given 18 years to repent and ask for forgiveness. Why does it require the rest of his life to ask for forgiveness. At the rate the justice system is working you are going to get your wish and he will have many years to repent. Forgiveness and punishment are two separate issues. The Bible has scripture on forgiveness, but it also has scripture on punishment. We are not revenge seekers. We believe that a person should be punished based on the crime they've committed. This man chose to TORTURE, RAPE and BRUTALLY MURDER a young woman in a short period of time. He had the choice to ask for forgiveness over the past 18 years. If he hasn't done it by now, then that is his problem. The punishment should fit the crime. If a child steals a candy bar from a convenience store, then the crime should be punished accordindly and appropriately. Punishment in this case would probably be some form of community service or service to the convenience store operator. When someone TORTURES, RAPES, and BRUTALLY MURDERS a young women then I absolutly believe the dealth penalty is warranted as a measure of punishment. I'm all for someone saving their eternal soul by permitting them to ask for forgiveness, but don't you think if Cal Brown were sorry for his crime he would have done this at some point in the past 18 years? I think people are far too concerned about the well being of these horrible criminals and not enough about the victims. Who knows if Holly was given the time to repent any transgressions in her life that she felt needed forgiveness? Probably not. I fundamentally disagree with you.
