A new Bill is in committee in Oregon that would allow the state to cultivate, harvest and sell medical marijuana.
Should Oregon be in charge of growing and selling medical marijuana?

What's the difference between medical marijuana and all the other pharmiceutical drugs that are being produced? Most of the manufactured drugs have side effects worse (combined) than the original complaint. Medical marijuana is a natural herb without the harmful side effects. If it were to be leagalized, I would happily give up my current pain meds in favor of this.

no way should the feds or state have control on the distribution of this product. reason why is looking at tabacco it was a lot cleaner when they werent completely in control now its filled with preservatives and worse stuff than the actually tabacco plant. the same thing would happen with marijuana. they should tax it and the shops but not have control on it. they have there hands in so much other stuff why make another thing fail. the people can benefit from the tax portion but the peoples health would be even worse smoking a bunch of preservatives than a actual herb.

I personally think that all states (not just Oregon) should jump on the band wagon! Why should just one state get all the profit!! If the Federal government would get out of their 1960's thinking and get with the current times they might just realize that the money from the sale of Marijuana could very well pull us out of this recession....

i couldn't agree more, everyone should know by now that marijuana is FAR less harmful than cigarettes and alcohol. i cant stand the fact that anyone is in prison for years of there life for simply for using/selling this mellowing plant, as far as I'm concerned there's a lot of money to be made on this and Oregon is the perfect place to start.

It would be good for the State of Oregon to grow medical marijuana -- provided no more, nor any greater penalties than already exist are imposed on the private cultivation, purveyance, sale or possession of "pot."
And it would be a good first step toward taking the crime out of "the marijuana industry."
I don't use pot. But I have inoperable cancer, and one day I might need marijuana to solve problems associated with my cancer's treatment.
Thus, I believe all who do use "grass" -- for whatever reason -- should be able to do so (and to grow, possess, acquire or purvey it) legally. THAT would remove a lot of the crime from "the marijuana industry," since drug lords would increasingly find less profit in a less restrictive "pot industry." And that has to be good, by whatever means accomplished.
Official State-grown medical "grass" would employ many of this rain-green-state's "green thumbs" -- lots of whom currently languish in unemployment compensation lines (for those lucky ones whose benefits have not yet expired).
President Obama's "stimulus law" can help fund such state programs as are needed to grow official "Oregon grass." And the prospect of finding work legally growing grass will SURELY "stimulate" interest in the State's heretofore unsung "green" heroes.
cheers,

In short, no.
In my opinion, the state has no business even attempting to supply the medicinal needs of its people.
I agree that the current legislation is somewhat flawed, but I don't think it is doing more harm then good.
If the state feels so inclined to get in on the profit, which is quite obviously their only motive, they could take up another model of failed legislation from our neighbors to the south.

This is a terrible idea. I am a medical marijuana patient, and my only income is SSI disability. I am unable to grow my own marijuana, but I know a medical marijuana patient who does grow, this person agreed to be my legal provider. My marijuana is FREE, this person charges me NOTHING. Without my provider I would be unable to have medical marijuana as my limited income would never allow me to buy it. The State would CHARGE me a FEE for the medical marijuana I currently get for FREE! I would be UNABLE to have medical marijuana if I had to pay the State for it, my incomes just to low.

I think Rep. Tomei's remarks about how dangerous it is to have a grow site is untrue. Any Oregon citizen should have the right to grow or not if they follow the guidelines put forth by the OMMP. Obviously, these guidelines could include changes such as: the individual needs to have a clean criminal record, have resided in same home for at least five years, have a safe grow site that is completely secluded from the public and of course, be the appropriate age(21). The government should sanction grow sites, purchase the marijuana from these sites and have them pay state taxes on it. The state would be taking in more revenue which of course would benefit the state in providing better schools, new highways, etc.
I think it's very dangerous to let the government take control of how to administer marijuana. Everyone's use is an individual thing. It can be a lot or a little according to their medical conditions. A lot of people opt for this in lieu of heavy prescription painkillers. Can the government assure us that the costs will be even slightly affordable considering how expensive and how much man power it would take to fill the needs of the entire state of Oregon.
Give Oregon residents another way to earn an honest living.

Ever since Lyndon Bane's "Great Society" and the"War on Poverty", we have had a long series of "Wars on ...", which ALL have made the problems WORSE. Much worse.
The problem isn't exactly "liberal" or "conservative". It's a government corporate socialism problem. The agencies that have sprung up around it have a vested interest in perpetuating the problem. THEY HAVE FIGURED OUT HOW TO MAKE GOBS OF MONEY FROM IT.
Just like alcohol prohibition created a HUGE organized crime problem in the 1920' and 30's, the problem with our southern border is OUT OF CONTROL.
Pheonix Arizona is now the #2 kidnapping capital of the world and they have had BEHEADINGS there because of the Drug War.
I personally have absolutely no use whatsoever for dope of any kind (especially the rotten stuff our Pharmaceutical companies are poisoning the world with). But as a Constitutionalist, I have a HUGE problem with government micro-managing people's lives. Things are really bad for us little guys down here in the proletariat.

Anyone who has experience in the medicinal efficacy of cannabis knows that their is no "silver bullet"... the number of strains and the myriad of effect they can prompt in the individual is mind boggling. It can take a compassionate caregiver sometimes years to find the "perfect" medicine for one particular patient.
Is the state going to have menus mirroring that of a California dispensary? I think not...
I just wish that any changes of current legislation would be handled by only patients, caregivers, doctors, and other qualified individuals, with the knowledge and experience with medicinal cannabis to make an informed decision.
The state should not be growing cannabis.

what the State of Oregon needs to do is pass legislation so that medical marijuana growers such as I can produce, and sell plants directly to OMP card holders, as well as allow for co-ops for OMP card holders to join to gain access to their medication.
I would also argue it is high time commercial hemp is legalized, therein where the State coffers will fill.
