The principal of a Vancouver, WA high school is cracking down on how students dance by having them sign a contract against certain types of dancing. Do you think schools should restrict the way students dance? 18 CommentsLeave a comment |
Yes, this would be a good idea.
Yes, this would be a good idea.
Having recently graduated high school, I think it's completely justified to restrict certain types of dancing. Not only are they disguising but they put many individuals in uncomfortable positions. A lot of people feel like they have to get overly physical to fit in or have to put up with someone basically groping them. Someone should always be looking out for the innocence of the youth.
A great idea that will make students feel comfortable and safe. Those should be the first standards that are met at a school sponsored dance. Schools should be teaching what is appropriate public behavior in social settings.
I wasn't going to comment until I read Tracy's posting. "Schools should be teaching what is apppropriate"???? Schools? Seriously? IT IS THE PARENTS OB TRACY, YOU TWIT!!! Once again some moron wants to put all the responsibility on schools for what is the parents freaking job!!! Number one society has taken every right from the schools and given them all of the responsibility instead! It is opposite for the students, all the rights and no responsibility! It is ridiculous what those of us who work in schools have to deal with because of parents. I know how parents should be I had good parents. It is not how it was when I went to school but should be! PARENTS STOP BEING LAZY AND TAKE SOME BLOODY RESPONSIBILITY! TRUST YOUR SCHOOLS AND THEIR STAFF AND STOP BLAMING ALL OF YOUR PROBLEMS ON US! YOU ARE THE PROBLEM!

I think it is a very good Idea to monitor our children at the dances. I for do go to the school dance to monitor my daughter from afar and she doesn't know I am there until the dance is almost over so she knows I am there just not how long I have been there watching. I have also had her uncles go and keep watch. This is the only way that I can make sure that my Daughter is acting appropriatly and that others are as well. I for one would love to see the schools take action like this to not only help the students and parents as well
Dancing is a form of expression, is square dancing the only legitimate form of K-12 self expression? It might be to those whom are rhytmically challenged, what's a little bump and grind with clothes on - instead of sneaking off for some "frisky business"...
Hooray for a Principal with a backbone who is wiling to set standards. It is not so much taking repsonsibility for what some parents, won't do, can't do or don't do...It is about having students and their sometimes absent parents see and experience that the school staff, as well as the school environment has standards and values that they are willing to put forth. There many other circumstances,(ie) assemblies, graduations, sporting events, etc. where students need to know and follow set protocal for behavior. It is not a lesson in parenting, it is a wake up call that the school staff is in charge and willing to set reasonable standards for behavior and decorum.
Better yet, why hold these dances at all? That's a serious question. What is the purpose of these dances? Is it "socialization"? What aspect of socialization is this? Sending them to a dark room with music blaring, to dance with the same people they spend all day at school with....how is this useful to their social lives? What similarities does it hold to the real world? How many workplaces hold periodic 'get together with coworkers and dance dirty in the name of socializing' events, anyway? Are we training kids for the Rave and bar scene?
Are we making sure the "ugly" and unpopular kids get an extra special reminder, once a month or so, about just how ugly and unpopular they are, as they are snubbed and left standing against the wall...all in the name of fun, and courtesy the schools they must legally attend?
Dances were horrible when I was in school. If now they're becoming even worse - government-sponsored opportunites to grope each other in public in the name of dancing - I don't see what purpose they serve.
This is an issue that I have mixed feelings about. Each generation has dances which older people object to. In the 20's the Charleston was objected to by older people. In the 60's we had a lot of dances that our parents didn't like. Even the Waltz was once considered to be obscene because a man and a woman danced face to face as in the marriage bed, as my music appreciation instructor put it when I attended Everett Community College.
The more effort people put into attempting to restrict natural behavior, the more it will backfire on them. As long as the kids aren't hurting each other, allow them express themselves and their generation's style.
I think its a touchy subject as well. As stated before, every generation has this issue. HOWEVER, i think if back in the 50s the parents were given the choice of having their kids do the "twist" or the "MTV-BET" (Im yet to see a name for the bumping and grinding they call "dancing"), i think the parents would hand down choose the twist. I think this goes beyond any generational thing because by way of comparison, you dont get much worse than "dry humping" on a dance floor. If we were to logically follow order of progression, i wouldnt be surprised if straight up "sex" was the next dance move. Put it in your partner and dosey-doe. Im 27 and even I find what our youth are up to pretty disgusting. I personally blame it on the fact that the USA has become a pathetically, popularity driven "Hip Hop nation". HipHop is 90% sexual, no matter which way you slice it. Its as simple as that.
This principal is right out of the movie "Footloose." Backward ass, ultra right wing Christian con-manservative! This is an issue out of the Bible-belt Midwest or deep south, but should not be an issue here in the great NW.
The religious right is the most dangerous element amongst a free society, we see what they do in other countries, they call themselves Al Quida, Taliban, Mossad, so everything they say and do is OK because they do it all in the name of God...blah, blah, blah!
The end of the world will come from these small minded deeply religious fanatics, for they are the most evil of all, they kill and mame all in the name of their God...First, its dancing, then its drinking, then its being out after midnight, you just watch those slimey, slippery suckers!
Got to have the real. Just not the same with fake. Would I rather support Washington tree growers or Chinese fake tree makers? You think we have problems now, this is just the beginning. Let's stop the hemorage of cash flow to China and let's stop the flow of China made goods to this country. With thousands of people losing their jobs, lets put Americans back to work making American goods. Show your support now by buying a good old American grown Christmas Tree. Oh by the way Governor G. Merry Christmas. Your allowing that cheesey sign in the capitol building in not going to take away my Christmas spirit. When you go to Mass on Christmas Eve. I hope you think about that sign.
Okay this is plain and simple, every generation things get more uptight first there was the prohibition, that backfired there was still many hidden speakeasy's, then there was criminalization of drugs, that did no good, drugs are still around, now they want to do this to dancing? What are they thinking, because one principal wants to run his school, strict almost religious controlled environment? The way things are going you are going to need a license to procreate. Teenagers should know better and PARENTS need to take time out of their selfish lazy schedule to teach their kids what is appropriate, but no they rather have their fun and force others to make these limits. Parenting in the late 20th century (Due to the inventions of video games, cell phones, internet, computers and what ever parents use as a babysitter while they go off and do what they want to do.) has become quite bad. I am sorry but I was raised without Cell phones, video games or internet as a kid, my mother was there to teach me the rights and wrongs. I am sorry but PARENTS take time with your kid, he/she will thank you and she/he will love you for it.
But I am asking a lot. It will only get worse the next generation will raise their kids more selfishly than the parents of the late 20th century has. They don't want to spend time with their kids they rather be off parting or having fun.
If we are not careful there will be a day when everything gets out of control.
As long as no teenager gets pregnant while dirty dancing why does it matter? Religion has caused nothing but trouble. In this day and age of atheism, agnosticism, religion is struggling to control this reality. One day the truth will come out and all the lies and what not that each religion has shown to control the followers will come to light and chaos will happen. Just wait
Absolutely it should be restricted. Those raised with no boundaries or restrictions, become adults with the same tendencies. As adults, that behavior becomes even more offensive.
JB, you are obviously part of the problem. Its freaking dancing. You thought Elvis and the Beatles were shocking in their day, now its this. Sorry, but we Northwesterners will never, ever conform to your 1930's view of life. I agree with self expression of our youth, as long as they are not out breaking laws, who cares?? I know you would prefer they stay home and read the Bible, but fella, that ain't ever gonna happen, so grow up and get with the times.
If you do not like it, please move to Utah, where your fellow zealot religious right wing fanatics hold high carnival (and power), and have successfully banished fun.
