What do you think of McCain's decision to pick Sarah Palin as a Vice-Presidential Candidate?

Go Vandals!! She doesn't look like no Idaho potato, but this ain't going to help McCain's PR problem with the rumors that he's a tad bit of a playboy womanizer. Of course, the playboy womanizer we elected in 1992 turned out to be just what the country needed at the time, and all things considered was a most excellent president.

Pat McCartney said:

Finally! A candidate who will draw attention to the "upper left-hand corner"! Perhaps the national news outlets will have to wait for the polls to close out here before they call the election this time.

Harold Olsen said:

With Sarah Palin as John McCain's choice for VP the Democrats are saying that now McCain can not use Obama's inexperience against him anymore because Palin is also inexperienced. Wrong! As Governor of Alaska, Palin has had to deal with both Russia and Canada giving her foreign policy experience that Obama does not have. As Governor, and before that she was a mayor, she has leadership ability that Obama also does not have. Obama's lack of experience is still a valid issue. He's still just an empty suit.

Sarah said:

Today is the first time I have felt positive throughout this long election season! It’s disappointing that so many in the media are so quick to attack such a decent woman who has such an outstanding record of fighting government corruption in her state. I am sure many independent women are feeling a glimmer of hope for the future today. We refuse to be defined as either pro or anti choice. The future of our country is so much bigger than one issue. Additionally, a woman with a son in Iraq is sure to bring balance and reason to the office.

webdog said:

Although I am not for McCain in the coming election, I think Palin is exactly the perfect and most intelligent move the Republican/McCain could have made. She has a very high approval rating in her state and has tackled lower profile foreign policy. She is also all about Exploring ANWR in her home state. The big question is will the US citizens think he is a "Johnny come lately" by trying to bring a minority VP into the White House. Who knows. I do look forward to learning more about her in the near future. As has been echoed in my office since earlier this morning, "Would he have endorsed a female VP had Obama or Hillary never been seeking Democratic nomination". I would say no.

Raymond Borbon said:

Brilliant move.

A woman who is not caught up with the dirt of the old gray haired men of Washington D.C. Someone who holds family values and is very much in touch with middle class America.

McCain is showing Obama what leadership change truly is. Obama instead picked a 30+ year veteran. Not much of a change there.

Obama is nothing more than a used car salesman who stole Hillary's ideas and made them worse.

This will take the sails out of the Obama campaign and surely caught them off guard.

Palin's short tenure has given her executive experience and also more credentials than what Obama has already. She didn't just vote present over 100 times.

The truth is that Obama is nothing new at the capital and being from Chicago does not get too many votes from the rural population in addition to the silent majority - middle class Americans.

Well done McCain. I can see a true leader and the term Maverick is appropriate. I was not going to vote for you but instead against Obama. With this pick I have seen you in a new light.

I think Sarah Palin is the perfect choice for the republican party. I felt a sense of accomplishment with the announcement. I now have some interest in the upcoming election

McCain is apparently taking poor advice from Karl Rove. She is inexperienced and not ready to handle the SERIOUS issues the country faced. By the way, Rove should be held in contempt by the US Congress. www.contemptforrove.com

Les said:

By the way, where is McCain's USA lapel pin? If you check out pics from Dayton, OH, he wasn't wearing one. Sara Pallin, had one; her husband, had one on...but McCain? Sorry! Why hasn't the media picked up on that subtlety as they did with Obama, giving fools like Sean Hannity some invalid ammo?

Ceecee said:

Hooray. Go Sarah! ! ! You go girl. Go straight to the White House. You will be a great vice-President. If you are called upon to do so, I'm sure you'll be able to fill in as president too.

Thank the Lord, we have a truly pro-life platform to vote for. Sarah Palin is just the right person to be on the ticket. I definitely will not need to vote for a write-in now.

c said:

Sarah Palin isn't pro-life. She is anti-choice. See if she gives a shit about the 8-cell blastocyst once it becomes an inner-city black child. See whether she loses any sleep over the life of civilians in Afghanistan or Iraq, or someone on death row convicted on hearsay. She's not pro-life. She's anti-woman. Or pro-teenage-pregnancy.

A beauty queen and former mayor of a town of 5,000 people one step away from presidency with a buy that barely can breathe because he is so old. Yeah .. that'll be good.

Kevin said:

"Weak" is the only word that comes to mind. Eight is truly enough.

Quinn said:

She's a very bad person. "Old Man Syphilis" picks "Mrs. Hitler"... if they get elected, I'm leaving this place. There will be marshal law.

Angela B said:

If we are going to call Sarah Palin 'former mayor', rather than what she IS, which is the Governor of the 56th state of the USA....let's call Obama 'former community organizer'. Let's see....which one sounds more credible? By golly, even a 'former mayor' sounds a little more impressive than a 'former community organizer'.

Quinn said:

Angela, there aren't 56 states...

Geri said:

Fantastic! She's a breath of fresh air!
She is going to be a wonderful vice-president!
From everything I've read about her she is smart,
qualified, honest and experienced. Did I mention
she's a woman?

Angela B. said:

Oh dang. So I can't type. Let's pretend I said '46th' like I meant to do, shall we? Governor of the 46th state of the Union. Why should we ignore the woman's current and quite considerable achievements, and disparage her for what she used to be, on her way to her present role? And if you do, why shouldn't we point out the Obama used to do...what exactly DID he used to do, besides shunt public funds to private special interest groups?

Daisy Mae said:

Quinn stated, "if they get elected, I'm leaving this place." Well, Quinn, if McCain and Palin make it to office, I'll buy you a ticket so you can leave like you want to. I heard that song and dance during the last election from some Hollywood individuals who swore they would leave the country if Bush got re-elected. Guess what? Threats! They're still here! I would've bought them a ticket too!

I wasn't looking very well upon the McCain campaign.....but now I am. Obama is all about change? Hah! If he were, he wouldn't have signed on a fellow that is another Washington insider. Palin brings real fresh air! And she's got more experience than Mr. Obama.

Quinn said:

First off, GOD DAMNIT!! ALASKA WAS THE 49TH STATE!! FUCK!! Why do republicans always make Americans look stupid?! I'm certainly not blind. Obama is just as guilty as the other goons, he wont change anything. John McCain on the other hand is mentally handicapped, old, and evil(not to mention senile). I don't see how a Luddite, racist, anti-environmentalist, capitalistic pig, is a good choice for VP, even if she is a woman.

You're all nuts. Go play in traffic.

Shannon said:

Quinn
I think you need a nap.

Russ said:

I will take Palin for President over Obama ANY DAY! Those who say she has no international relations, I laugh at you! She has WAY more leadership experience AND international relations than Obama does because of all the resources AK distributes to other nations. Also, Biden is nothing more than an old bully, and i fear what would happen to america if he were to step in. Sure, McCain is pretty old, but as much as i hate to say it, i think if theres a young black president, theres alot of hateful people out there who are willing to go to any length necassary to get rid of a black president. And theres no way in HELL i would ever want to live under Biden's "rule" if that were to ever happen! That being said, Republicans ARE bringing change with this ticket, and i must say im proud to be able to have said to Mrs. Palin when i met her at a small AK airport during her campaign for governor, "You are going to reach very good heights one day!!" Sarah, if you read this.. Your welcome! hahaha. McCain/Palin 2008!!!

Daisy Mae said:

So when Quinn gets upset, he resorts to foul language because he cannot put forth what's on his mind with a civil tongue. And when what's on his mind cannot come forth in a lucid manner, he also has to start calling people names. Republicans look stupid? Hmmmmm....let's keep it civil and on issue, Quinn. You're losing credibility. That's not senility sneaking in there, is it, buddy?

You say McCain is mentally handicapped. Has that been proven by a medical doctor or is this your opinion. You say he is old.....okay, I'll give you that one. His age is verifiable by public records. You say he is evil. Now what public office or entity can we get irrefutable evidence of this so that it can be taken as fact.

I think you are angry and have resorted to wagging your tongue and as such, are letting barbs fly just because you have reached a position where you can no longer afford any of us a completely civil and productive conversation.

Step away and take some deep breaths to compose yourself. When an intelligent person resorts to foul language and name calling, he loses the respect of everyone.

To quote a very old television show....."Just the facts, please...."

Keep it civil and factual.

McCain and Palin for 2008!

the republicans have allready been all over obama over the experience thing and if he had picked someone like palin he would have certainly never heard the end of it. dubya dont know his ass from a hole in the ground and the republicans still supported this idiot. and now mccain is using this hurricaine as a photo op to raise money. he is playing this storm for every vote. if he really wants to help try stepping away from the camera and offer up his unoccupied homes to the displaced people. it ainte gonna happen! mccain says this isnt about being republicans its about being americans. ok step away from the cameras get some boots and go help out and quit using this for your own benefit.

I think this will make for a most exciting election!

Sarah Palin is an awesome Alaskan...my only criticism is that some people in Idaho are claiming she is from Sandpoint! She only spent the first three months of her life there. She is an Alaskan through and through. Thank goodness she left Idaho :)

Ian said:

Hmmm, a Governor who is under investigation! Smells like the perfect GOP ticket. Im sorry but the only reason people are digging her is her pro-life stance. Well if your voting on this one issue then you deserve another 4 years of the same old crap. Some advice to you pro-lifers...........dont have abortions and keep your religous beliefs to yourself and we might see some real progression here with our Federal govt.

erv said:

it looks like the whole family is pro life as her unmarried 17 yr old daughter is 5 months pregnant. so are pro lifers anti condems? the press is gonna have another hay day over this one. i suddenly feel kinda sorry for that girl as now her personal life is going to be dragged thru the tabloids.

doug sander said:

For once, let's address the valid issues. For the first time someone who understands ANWR, the existing pipeline in Alaska, and the ability and problems of producing American resources that could help to solve our immediate energy and economic problems has a real say at the national level. I, for one, am tired of Nancy Pelosi and Ted Kennedy setting the agenda for all Americans. It's time we had someone who truly lives and works among us have a place at the table in Washington D.C.

C said:

Palin and experience? She is going to be responsible for our international relations? My God .. the lady didn't even have a passport until 2007 and largely got her 'international' experience going on vacation trips to Mexico. The people that are going to fall for this and vote on her are just as senile as McSame.

Observer said:

Well... if her 17 year old daughter's pregnancy is such a "private family matter"... then, shouldn't what they all decide to do with the baby (as in, abort, adopt out, keep) ALSO BE A PRIVATE MATTER?? Listen up, all you pro-lifers. Avoid hypocrisy. Recognize that this IS a private matter, and NOT one that should be LEGISLATED by BIG BROTHER. Anti-choice advocates like Palin maybe ought to get a logic tune-up.

Mikael said:

Last time I checked this is the year 2008.
Abortion is outdated and obsolete. There are over 20 forms of birth control available via Planned Parenthood and your tax dollars.(Other than rape or incest there should be no need for an abortion)
It is No longer a political issue this century!

Observer said:

Mikael, don't pretend that there aren't over one million abortions in this country every year. I agree, abortions are traumatic and sad, and the need for them would definitely be reduced with the use of effective, affordable birth control~ But if 17 year olds, and 16 year olds, and younger, are still getting abortions, obviously the birth control message isn't getting through effectively for everyone. I'm just saying... is *is* a private matter, what one does with one's pregnancies... the anti-choice people need to recognize this... more education and availability of birth control is a reasonable goal, and one I support.

Observer said:

Sorry, in my message directly above, I meant to say "... if 17 year olds and 16 year olds, and younger, are still getting PREGNANT..."

(although of course they are also getting abortions)

At any rate, abortion will remain a political issue as long as the need for them is still there. And the need for them will remain until safe, effective, affordable birth control is available and well understood by everyone.

c said:

Yep ... Mikael you hit the nail on the head. Mrs Palin also is strongly against sex ed in schools. So I really think that that 'abstence' education and her motherhood helped in getting that message across.

BTW ... as far as being a responsible person. Gov. Palin flew back 10 hours on a plane after her water broke from Texas to Alaska to give birth to her 'premature' baby. Now THATS responsible for you. This would be the last person I have in mind for 'family values'

Quinn said:

Daisy Mae, I don't understand why you want our great country to die!!! Baffles me...

I'm not name calling in a derogatory manner... Palin and McCain are literally mentally handicapped and evil. It's not my opinion... taking a look at their past... what they've voted for, you would think they're terrible people. Palin has voted AGAINST the clean water and air act... McCain has changed his mind over many things multiple times... Personally, I think they have the lowest credibility of the candidates... Obama certainly has his faults... but he's better than two people who sincerely do not care about the well being of others. I'm a proud atheist and I can certainly identify that a little girl, who gets pregnant at 17 is NOT moral!!

It's ironic that the "Religious Right" in this country consists of corrupt and immoral people whom disregard logic and reasoning in the name of gluttony and arrogance.

C'mon people, this was the worse pick McSame could have made. The Conmenservatives are privatly reeling from this blunder. McSame clearly wanted, and found someone who had NEVER critisized him. The conmenservatives have been running ads of Biden and Hilary and their "prior" attacks on Obama daily. This 'chick' is 44 years old and was mayor of a small town in the middle of Alaska before being hand picked by Big Oil (that her husband works for) to run for govorner. And NO, she does not deal with Russia and Canada other than in friendhip. She is broiled ina scandel of her own (the firing of a legislator) and her daughter is a 17 year old SLUT that that Christan Taliban now worships for her not having an abortion! WAKE UP AMERICA AND VOTE FOR CHANGE OVER MCSAME!!

Mr. John conservative said:

As a conservative I do find it unsettling that John McCain has made such a poor choice for VP as Gov Palin. She maybe a nice person and a "budding" candidate, but she is far too young and in-experienced for the job, especially if McCain dies in office, which is a BIG possibility. I cannot vote for this GOP ticket and I urge fellow conservatives to follow suit. If Obama/Biden have done nothing in four years, we vote them out. But to simply vote GOP because that is what you (and your family) have always done, is foolish. The issues are with the Democrats this time around and their stronger candidates for change that this country needs so desperatly.

Maverick said:

Well, well, what a stupid move by the GOP. A governor who is under investigation for corruption from a State who's leading GOP Senator is also under investigation for corruption, how very Republican! And now, the Gov. Palin's unmarried 17 year old daughter is pregnant, and the GOP is squirming to put a pro-life spin on it, versus low moral parenting! Gov Palin's husband is hip deep in Big Oil's pockets, who wants to maintain the White House at all costs. How dumb are Republicans to stand for this and even stupider are the ones trying to "spin" this ticket into a positive...My Gosh, it must suck to be a republican about now, but alas, there is hope for our mis-guided GOP countrymen, and its called "VOTE FOR OBAMA/BIDEN!"

What is nice is that some people will open up the curtains to tell the story behind the screen. Mrs Palin has some dirty laundry left from her stint as Mayor that needed help:

I am a life long GOP member. However, this VP choice is a Slap in the face to every red-blooded life long GOP member by our arrogant and elitist GOP leadership. This woman is everything the GOP has been critisizing Obama for. She has NO business being on this ticket when there were so many wonderful more qualified and experienced choices out there. I am stunned and disgusted with my party on this one. I either will not vote or will vote for Obama this Fall.

Well lived in Alaska for years and years couldnt wait to leave, esspecially when Palin got into the picture. Only reason she was elected was because they wanted Murkoski out!! She has done nothing but screw up since she got in. What our country needs is another screw up! Sickens me!

Russ said:

To you so called "mature democrats" resorting to name calling, YOU ARE DISGUSTING!!! Calling Bristol Palin a "slut" is COMPLETELY UN-CALLED for and just REAKS of your overall desperation because you all realize that Change CAN AND WILL come from the same party you so blindly hate. Palin is the ONLY one qualified for the position she has been offered! Obama is a spoiled rich KID who doesn't want to work up the chain of command, so to speak! He got elected and spent a few months in his seat and then decided to play the race card (which by the way he is only 50% of) to try and win the presidency! Don't even get me started on the old Biden fart who doesn't know the meaning of the term COPYRIGHT!
And to the rest of the lower 48 states who think they know whats best for Alaska, stay out of it! These New Yorkers who advocate for alaska's clean air and land make me want to puke! We don't tell you how to build your skyscrapers, so don't tell us how to build our oil fields!!

C said:

Russ .. You call Biden old? What would you call McSame then? Ancient? Prehistoric? Besides that .. if you call Obama rich .. what do you think McSame is? Ever checked how rich he is ? The poor man doesn't even know how many houses he has.

Palin has no experience what so ever in international politics. The fact that Russia borders Alaska has as much to say as that Japan is a close neighbour to Washington State ... she didn't even have a passport until 2007.

Oil is a dead end road anyways ... the only way to become energy independent isn't drilling for more oil in ANWAR .. we can do it without drilling for oil.

Talia R. said:

They have my vote!!! If you watched tonight's Republican National Convention to hear Sarah Palin speak, then I shouldn't have to explain myself. She was brilliant. God Bless America!

If you choose your candidate based upon 1 public speaking event .. then I wonder why George W is in power.

I'd rather watch the Home Shopping Network or The Weather Channel then the RNC on TV.

C,

Oh god, can we get off the "mcsame" nickname, PLEASE! You guys sound absolutely retarded! Guess what, I HATE BUSH! ALOT of republican supporters do! Politicians LIE.. THEY CHEAT... THEY STEAL! Thats the way it has been, and thats the way it will always be! You guys are bitching about the fact that she had no passport until previously?! SO WHAT! I would feel MUCH more comfortable having a woman run the country than a man who hasn't even so much as passed any type of decent legislation! Your wrong about the international comment, its more than just the fact that alaska is bordering Russia, Canada, 2 INTERNATIONAL WATERS , Its by far the most IMPORTANT state in the union economically and, most importantly, militarily! You think AK Governers and Elected Officials havn't had dealings with the international community in one aspect or another? Oh they most CERTAINLY have. Perhaps not on the level of foreign policy, but thats still LOTS MORE than either Biden OR Obama can claim!! AND CAN WE GET OFF THE SUBJECT OF HER BEING FORMER MAYOR OF A SMALL TOWN PLEASE!?!?! SHE IS GOVERNOR OF THE MOST IMPORTANT STATE IN THE UNION!

Observer said:

LOL, Alaska "the most important state in the union"... you oughta be writing for Letterman, Leno and The Daily Show!

C said:

Russ,

Alaska isn't the most important state in the US. I would put either NY or California above that. NY because of all the financials there.

I don't think that Alaska governors had anything to do with international relationships .. if anything at all. Besides that .. she's only been the governor for 1.5 years. To beef up her resume they even had to mention that she was chairwoman of the PTA. Wow .. impressive.

She is governor of a state that has less people then most major cities in the US and was major of a town that is the size of Cle Elum who she left financially in shambles. Vermont has almost more citizens then Alaska.

Alaska is close to being last by GDP in the United States http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_by_GDP_(nominal)

erv said:

i been watching the RNC and have to ask is being a republican mean you have to be old and fat? it looks like the old jim and tammy fay baker crowd. maybe they could jazz it up a bit by playing smoke over water on the organ..

erv said:

i keep hearing about her husband being a steelworker and she mentioned it again tonite. the steelworkers are the biggest union in the united states and they support obama for president.

Russ said:

I will give you that much, i suppose i jumped the gun on the whole "most important state" issue, NY IS the financial center and ofcourse California has a bigger economy than even some COUNTRIES do. But you have to admit Other than those two, and probably TX, Alaska IS easily in the top 5 of the more important states. And why does Population always have to be the deciding factor?? Yes, there is only 700,000 people, but its still a State of The Union!!! Biden and Obama have NEVER been in a position of REAL decision making and authority! The fact is, the left wing media, which has a choke hold on most the country, just started pouncing on Palin and her family and her record UNFAIRLY, simply because she was not a well known politician. Its no wonder that small america has such a hard time getting any real word in at the national table. Because the big city folk have this arrogance about them. Its real sad. I am pro choice. I dont like Bush anymore, but i sure as hell am not about to hop on Obama's bandwagon simply because he saw an "easy win" situation with Bush's slipping approval ratings.

Brian said:

Well Well there sure is alot hate coming from some open "minded" democrats. I think McCain made a good choice. She is a family centered person who believes in family values. As for her teenage daughter how can of you can remember being a teenager and make unwise decsions not matter how you were raised. As for leadership lets see she is in charge of running a state if that isn't leadership then I don't what else would be. McCain knows what it will take to stand up the Evil in the world. Unless you like nuclear bomds going off in our cites. No Obama isn't a leader he makes good speeches but not a leader.

Rich said:

After listening to Palin's speech last night I can't vote for her. Too much venom and no substance or insight. She came off as a light-weight floozie with a mean streak, and I'm pretty concerned that when compared to the others in the race, that's just what she is.

Reilly said:

Absolutely she is a great choice!
If McCain/Palin win I think we will see our
taxes go down, useless government programs go
away, wasteful spending cease or at least slow
down. McCain is truly our first reform and
change candidate to come out of either party.
They need to audit all government departments and
hold heads accountable for their budgets and spending. Our government needs to be put on a diet~big time.

erv said:

i agree with the above post about the mean and venom and thought during the speech she is really going to spew out the sound bites and its going to be hard to deal with a constant flood of that but after the speech the commentators were saying what a great job she did reading the speech from the teleprompter. she would say it then follow the teleprompters direction so the crowd can react.

something i have never noticed obama doing is reading notes or using teleprompters. mccain has to read notes about those things he cares so dearly about? where it really flopps is when he reads a joke in a monotone voice then looks up at the camera and grins. it just dont work.

Observer said:

From today's AP: Apparently Palin "stretched the facts" quite a bit in her speech last night.

PALIN: "I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending ... and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told the Congress 'thanks but no thanks' for that Bridge to Nowhere."

THE FACTS: As mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million. In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a "bridge to nowhere."

PALIN: "There is much to like and admire about our opponent. But listening to him speak, it's easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform — not even in the state senate."

THE FACTS: Compared to McCain and his two decades in the Senate, Obama does have a more meager record. But he has worked with Republicans to pass legislation that expanded efforts to intercept illegal shipments of weapons of mass destruction and to help destroy conventional weapons stockpiles. The legislation became law last year. To demean that accomplishment would be to also demean the work of Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, a respected foreign policy voice in the Senate. In Illinois, he was the leader on two big, contentious measures in Illinois: studying racial profiling by police and requiring recordings of interrogations in potential death penalty cases. He also successfully co-sponsored major ethics reform legislation.

PALIN: "The Democratic nominee for president supports plans to raise income taxes, raise payroll taxes, raise investment income taxes, raise the death tax, raise business taxes, and increase the tax burden on the American people by hundreds of billions of dollars."

THE FACTS: The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, concluded that Obama's plan would increase after-tax income for middle-income taxpayers by about 5 percent by 2012, or nearly $2,200 annually. McCain's plan, which cuts taxes across all income levels, would raise after tax-income for middle-income taxpayers by 3 percent, the center concluded.

Obama would provide $80 billion in tax breaks, mainly for poor workers and the elderly, including tripling the Earned Income Tax Credit for minimum-wage workers and higher credits for larger families.

He also would raise income taxes, capital gains and dividend taxes on the wealthiest. He would raise payroll taxes on taxpayers with incomes above $250,000, and he would raise corporate taxes. Small businesses that make more than $250,000 a year would see taxes rise.

MCCAIN: "She's been governor of our largest state, in charge of 20 percent of America's energy supply ... She's responsible for 20 percent of the nation's energy supply. I'm entertained by the comparison and I hope we can keep making that comparison that running a political campaign is somehow comparable to being the executive of the largest state in America," he said in an interview with ABC News' Charles Gibson.

THE FACTS: McCain's phrasing exaggerates both claims. Palin is governor of a state that ranks second nationally in crude oil production, but she's no more "responsible" for that resource than President Bush was when he was governor of Texas, another oil-producing state. In fact, her primary power is the ability to tax oil, which she did in concert with the Alaska Legislature. And where Alaska is the largest state in America, McCain could as easily have called it the 47th largest state — by population.

MCCAIN: "She's the commander of the Alaska National Guard. ... She has been in charge, and she has had national security as one of her primary responsibilities," he said on ABC.

THE FACTS: While governors are in charge of their state guard units, that authority ends whenever those units are called to actual military service. When guard units are deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, for example, they assume those duties under "federal status," which means they report to the Defense Department, not their governors. Alaska's national guard units have a total of about 4,200 personnel, among the smallest of state guard organizations.

FORMER ARKANSAS GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE: Palin "got more votes running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska than Joe Biden got running for president of the United States."

THE FACTS: A whopper. Palin got 616 votes in the 1996 mayor's election, and got 909 in her 1999 re-election race, for a total of 1,525. Biden dropped out of the race after the Iowa caucuses, but he still got 76,165 votes in 23 states and the District of Columbia where he was on the ballot during the 2008 presidential primaries.

FORMER MASSACHUSETTS GOV. MITT ROMNEY: "We need change, all right — change from a liberal Washington to a conservative Washington! We have a prescription for every American who wants change in Washington — throw out the big-government liberals, and elect John McCain and Sarah Palin."

THE FACTS: A Back-to-the-Future moment. George W. Bush, a conservative Republican, has been president for nearly eight years. And until last year, Republicans controlled Congress. Only since January 2007 have Democrats have been in charge of the House and Senate.

@Russ. In all reality, other then oil and fish, Alaska hasn't much to offer. Once we are starting to stop to rely on oil the importance of Alaska will severely be reduced. Also Sarah Palin can't even get the facts right on the Pledge of Allegiance

Also .. keep in mind that McCain isn't really the reliable guy people think he is, because the hard fact is that in the current congress John McCain has missed 407 votes (63.8% of total)

Sarah Palin lowering taxes?

Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a “fiscal onservative”. During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over
33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation
(1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they benefited residents.

The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration weren’t enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed
money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage
the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a
new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece of property that the City didn’t even have clear title to, that was still in litigation 7 yrs later--to the delight of the lawyers involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5m for road projects that could have been done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing.

And last but not least some of McCain’s staff have been calling her “Failin” in private. That slip of the tongue made it onto the air:

I trust McCain's experience and Palin's witts FAR FAR more than that of Obama's life. (by the way, look it up, he isn't even a legal US Citezen). EVERYONE hates Bush. A note to all by Anne Kilkenny

Dear friends,

So many people have asked me about what I know about Sarah Palin in the
last 2 days that I decided to write something up . . .

Basically, Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton have only 2 things in
common: their gender and their good looks. :)

You have my permission to forward this to your friends/email contacts
with my name and email address attached, but please do not post it on
any websites, as there are too many kooks out there . . .

Thanks,
Anne

ABOUT SARAH PALIN

I am a resident of Wasilla, Alaska. I have known Sarah since 1992.
Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a
first-name basis. Our children have attended the same schools. Her
father was my child's favorite substitute teacher. I also am on a
first name basis with her parents and mother-in-law. I attended more
City Council meetings during her administration than about 99% of the
residents of the city.

She is enormously popular; in every way she’s like the most popular
girl in middle school. Even men who think she is a poor choice and
won't vote for her can't quit smiling when talking about her because
she is a "babe".

It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She
kept her most recent pregnancy a secret from her children and parents
for seven months.

She is "pro-life". She recently gave birth to a Down's syndrome baby.
There is no cover-up involved, here; Trig is her baby.

She is energetic and hardworking. She regularly worked out at the gym.

She is savvy. She doesn't take positions; she just "puts things out
there" and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit.

Her husband works a union job on the North Slope for BP and is a
champion snowmobile racer. Todd Palin’s kind of job is highly
sought-after because of the schedule and high pay. He arranges his
work schedule so he can fish for salmon in Bristol Bay for a month or
so in summer, but by no stretch of the imagination is fishing their
major source of income. Nor has her life-style ever been anything
like that of native Alaskans.

Sarah and her whole family are avid hunters.

She's smart.

Her experience is as mayor of a city with a population of about 5,000
(at the time), and less than 2 years as governor of a state with about
670,000 residents.

During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running
this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been
pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had
gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had
given rise to a recall campaign.

Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a “fiscal conservative”. During her 6
years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over
33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the
City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation
(1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a
regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she
promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they
benefited residents.

The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration
weren’t enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed
money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it
with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage
the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said
she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a
new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a
multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece
of property that the City didn’t even have clear title to, that was
still in litigation 7 yrs later--to the delight of the lawyers
involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the
community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it
would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5m for road projects that
could have been done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing.

While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her office
redecorated more than once.

These are small numbers, but Wasilla is a very small city.

As an oil producer, the high price of oil has created a budget surplus
in Alaska. Rather than invest this surplus in technology that will
make us energy independent and increase efficiency, as Governor she
proposed distribution of this surplus to every individual in the state.

In this time of record state revenues and budget surpluses, she
recommended that the state borrow/bond for road projects, even while
she proposed distribution of surplus state revenues: spend today's
surplus, borrow for needs.

She’s not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideas
or compromise. As Mayor, she fought ideas that weren’t generated by
her or her staff. Ideas weren’t evaluated on their merits, but on the
basis of who proposed them.

While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected
City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from
the library some books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents
rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin's
attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew
her termination letter. People who fought her attempt to oust the
Librarian are on her enemies list to this day.

Sarah complained about the “old boy’s club” when she first ran for
Mayor, so what did she bring Wasilla? A new set of "old boys". Palin
fired most of the experienced staff she inherited. At the City and as
Governor she hired or elevated new, inexperienced, obscure people,
creating a staff totally dependent on her for their jobs and eternally
grateful and fiercely loyal--loyal to the point of abusing their power
to further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged happened in the
case of pressuring the State’s top cop (see below).

As Mayor, Sarah fired Wasilla’s Police Chief because he “intimidated”
her, she told the press. As Governor, her recent firing of Alaska's top
cop has the ring of familiarity about it. He served at her pleasure
and she had every legal right to fire him, but it's pretty clear that
an important factor in her decision to fire him was because he wouldn't
fire her sister's ex-husband, a State Trooper. Under investigation
for abuse of power, she has had to admit that more than 2 dozen
contacts were made between her staff and family to the person that she
later fired, pressuring him to fire her ex-brother-in-law. She tried to
replace the man she fired with a man who she knew had been reprimanded
for sexual harassment; when this caused a public furor, she withdrew
her support.

She has bitten the hand of every person who extended theirs to her in
help. The City Council person who personally escorted her around town
introducing her to voters when she first ran for Wasilla City Council
became one of her first targets when she was later elected Mayor. She
abruptly fired her loyal City Administrator; even people who didn’t
like the guy were stunned by this ruthlessness.

Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from saying anything
publicly about her.

When then-Governor Murkowski was handing out political plums, Sarah got
the best, Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission: one
of the few jobs not in Juneau and one of the best paid. She had no
background in oil & gas issues. Within months of scoring this great
job which paid $122,400/yr, she was complaining in the press about the
high salary. I was told that she hated that job: the commute, the
structured hours, the work. Sarah became aware that a member of this
Commission (who was also the State Chair of the Republican Party)
engaged in unethical behavior on the job. In a gutsy move which some
undoubtedly cautioned her could be political suicide, Sarah solved all
her problems in one fell swoop: got out of the job she hated and
garnered gobs of media attention as the patron saint of ethics and as a
gutsy fighter against the “old boys’ club” when she dramatically quit,
exposing this man’s ethics violations (for which he was fined).

As Mayor, she had her hand stuck out as far as anyone for pork from
Senator Ted Stevens. Lately, she has castigated his pork-barrel
politics and publicly humiliated him. She only opposed the “bridge to
nowhere” after it became clear that it would be unwise not to.

As Governor, she gave the Legislature no direction and budget
guidelines, then made a big grandstand display of line-item vetoing
projects, calling them pork. Public outcry and further legislative
action restored most of these projects--which had been vetoed simply
because she was not aware of their importance--but with the unobservant
she had gained a reputation as “anti-pork”.

She is solidly Republican: no political maverick. The State party
leaders hate her because she has bit them in the back and humiliated
them. Other members of the party object to her self-description as a
fiscal conservative.

Around Wasilla there are people who went to high school with Sarah.
They call her “Sarah Barracuda” because of her unbridled ambition and
predatory ruthlessness. Before she became so powerful, very ugly
stories circulated around town about shenanigans she pulled to be made
point guard on the high school basketball team. When Sarah's
mother-in-law, a highly respected member of the community and
experienced manager, ran for Mayor, Sarah refused to endorse her.

As Governor, she stepped outside of the box and put together of package
of legislation known as “AGIA” that forced the oil companies to march
to the beat of her drum.

Like most Alaskans, she favors drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife
Refuge. She has questioned if the loss of sea ice is linked to
global warming. She campaigned “as a private citizen” against a state
initiaitive that would have either a) protected salmon streams from
pollution from mines, or b) tied up in the courts all mining in the
state (depending on who you listen to). She has pushed the State’s
lawsuit against the Dept. of the Interior’s decision to list polar
bears as threatened species.

McCain is the oldest person to ever run for President; Sarah will be a
heartbeat away from being President.

There has to be literally millions of Americans who are more
knowledgeable and experienced than she.

However, there’s a lot of people who have underestimated her and are
regretting it.

CLAIM VS FACT
•“Hockey mom”: true for a few years
•“PTA mom”: true years ago when her first-born was in elementary
school, not since
•“NRA supporter”: absolutely true
•social conservative: mixed. Opposes gay marriage, BUT vetoed a bill
that would have denied benefits to employees in same-sex relationships
(said she did this because it was unconsitutional).
•pro-creationism: mixed. Supports it, BUT did nothing as Governor to
promote it.
•“Pro-life”: mixed. Knowingly gave birth to a Down’s syndrome baby
BUT declined to call a special legislative session on some pro-life
legislation
•“Experienced”: Some high schools have more students than Wasilla has
residents. Many cities have more residents than the state of Alaska.
No legislative experience other than City Council. Little hands-on
supervisory or managerial experience; needed help of a city
administrator to run town of about 5,000.
•political maverick: not at all
•gutsy: absolutely!
•open & transparent: ??? Good at keeping secrets. Not good at
explaining actions.
•has a developed philosophy of public policy: no
•”a Greenie”: no. Turned Wasilla into a wasteland of big box stores
and disconnected parking lots. Is pro-drilling off-shore and in ANWR.
•fiscal conservative: not by my definition!
•pro-infrastructure: No. Promoted a sports complex and park in a city
without a sewage treatment plant or storm drainage system. Built
streets to early 20th century standards.
•pro-tax relief: Lowered taxes for businesses, increased tax burden on
residents
•pro-small government: No. Oversaw greatest expansion of city
government in Wasilla’s history.
•pro-labor/pro-union. No. Just because her husband works union
doesn’t make her pro-labor. I have seen nothing to support any claim
that she is pro-labor/pro-union.

WHY AM I WRITING THIS?

First, I have long believed in the importance of being an informed
voter. I am a voter registrar. For 10 years I put on student voting
programs in the schools. If you google my name (Anne Kilkenny +
Alaska), you will find references to my participation in local
government, education, and PTA/parent organizations.

Secondly, I've always operated in the belief that "Bad things happen
when good people stay silent". Few people know as much as I do because
few have gone to as many City Council meetings.

Third, I am just a housewife. I don't have a job she can bump me out
of. I don't belong to any organization that she can hurt. But, I am no
fool; she is immensely popular here, and it is likely that this will
cost me somehow in the future: that’s life.

Fourth, she has hated me since back in 1996, when I was one of the 100
or so people who rallied to support the City Librarian against Sarah's
attempt at censorship.

Fifth, I looked around and realized that everybody else was afraid to
say anything because they were somehow vulnerable.

CAVEATS
I am not a statistician. I developed the numbers for the increase in
spending & taxation 2 years ago (when Palin was running for Governor)
from information supplied to me by the Finance Director of the City of
Wasilla, and I can't recall exactly what I adjusted for: did I adjust
for inflation? for population increases? Right now, it is impossible
for a private person to get any info out of City Hall--they are
swamped. So I can't verify my numbers.

You may have noticed that there are various numbers circulating for the
population of Wasilla, ranging from my "about 5,000", up to 9,000. The
day Palin’s selection was announced a city official told me that the
current population is about 7,000. The official 2000 census count was
5,460. I have used about 5,000 because Palin was Mayor from 1996 to
2002, and the city was growing rapidly in the mid-90’s.

The only thing he and Palin want is more war. Great ... just what we want. We are fighting a war we never had to fight and they want to go after more, while our country goes down the drain internally. Right now it looks like the extremists won and they didn't have to do anything for it. :(

Obama would be sooo much a better choice, unless you really would like to live in even worse economic conditions.
