Sonics Leaving To Oklahoma?

Oklahoma City Residents approved a sales tax increase to renovate their arena. It could send a message to the NBA the city is ready for a Professional Basketball team.

Do you think this is the beginning of the end of the Sonics in Seattle?

maybe Northrop Grumman could build them a stadium in seattle!

There's nothing wrong with Key Arena, but if they want more luxury boxes, the people wanting them should pay, not taxpayers. In other words, if the owners think it’s a good business investment, they should pay for it. If it’s not a good investment, then why would the general public want to pay for upgrades? Another idea: maybe we could tax team salaries over $250k/year at 50% to pay for it.

As it is, the regular tickets cost too much, so I only go to games when I get free tickets. You can get a great seat for $5 at local NCAA division II universities, and they happen to have very good teams! The NBA is not worth what they charge.

As far as the Sonics go, make them buy out the rest of their lease and then wave goodbye as they leave the state. We don't need any major league team and maybe we can start spending the money we've spent on basketball on something important--like the ROADS!!!

I live in Oregon and a die-hard Blazer fan. I would hate to see the Sonics leave Seattle but, I feel, the writing was on the wall when the Oklahoma City investors purchased the team....especially considering they currently have an arena that is superior to Key Arena...even without the recently passed bonds for Ford Center improvements.

I love the Key Arena. I think it is a great basketball arena. I can't say it's great for hockey, though. When I lived in Seattle I loved attending the Sonic and Thunderbird games.

I think those billionaire's living in Puget Sound probably have waited too long trying to put a package together to save the Sonics. I seriously doubt if they are for sale anyway. Also, what part of "no" don't they and the state legislature not understand when it comes to public financing of sports venues. The citizens of Seattle have spoken. "No public financing!"

If these people think an NBA team could be profitable under the right circumstances they should be willing to take the risk. Also, I don't think they should be looking for a team to relocate to Seattle. They should apply for an expansion team.

Bottom line: "Keep your hands off our Blazers!"

I'm still waiting for the Seahawks and Mariners to pay back the money they extorted from me to build their damned stadiums.

I grew up watching and listening to Sonics basketball from early elementary school days--remember the days of voice-of-the-Sonics Bob Blackburn, player-coach Lenny Wilkins, guard-forward Dick Snyder, ill-fated potential superstar Bob Rule? Nevertheless, I have grown steadily less interested in the Sonics (and pro-sports in general) as players have gotten more spoiled, become less appreciative of their fans, and demanded ridiculously exorbitant pay (for PLAYING A GAME!!!), and as pro-sport organizations have demanded taxpayer money for better play-pens than their rivals. (By the way, have costs of previous improvements made to the Coliseum/Key Arena or, for that matter, the non-existent Kingdome even been paid off at this point?!?) If the Sonics organization wants to leave, I say to them, 'Don't let the door hit you on the way out!' However, they should be forced to leave the Supersonics/Sonics franchise name and logo behind in Seattle as part of a settlement to buy out their remaining contract with Key Arena!

If they want to move, let them (re: the Sonics or any other sports group). We've paid plenty to give them the stadiums they so desperately needed (read some sarcasm there regarding the 'need'). Those sports folks are paid more than enough and have been catered to more than enough. If it's not good enough, go to Oklahoma, or anywhere for all I care, just away from here. We're tired of wasting our money on you and having it still not be good enough.

The glory days for the Sonics are long past and are seemingly going to be long in coming. With the Huskies, Cougs, and Zags in state we've not been hurting for top notch basketball entertainment lately anyway. My suggestion? Remodel the Key into a great hockey rink and lure an NHL team. Can you imagine how great Seattle/Vancouver, Seattle/Calgary, Seattle/LA games would be in that context? There might be some scheduling headaches for the WHL, but the T-Birds are a fixture too. Beats the heck out of getting whooped on by the Blazers too regularly, and there's that soccer franchise firing up too. Maybe those OK City guys miss their goats.

Survivial Tip for the Sonics in Oklahoma City....

In Oklahoma "safe sex" is defined as painting red x's on the sheep that kick.
