The city of Greenleaf, ID has an ordinance that encourages homeowners to have and know how to use a firearm.
Do you think city leaders should encourage gun ownership to protect life and property?

I do! I think that we should stop relying solely upon our government for our personal protection among other things. I live in a rural area and know that it could be many minutes if not hours before I got any help from law enforcement. A lot can happen in a very few minutes.
I also believe that the framers of our constitution provided the second amendment as a check to give the citezens of this country some control over our government because they knew first hand the dangers of NOT having that control.

Yes. I find this no more irrational than being encouraged to: keep an emergency and first aid kit and know how to use it, learn CPR, know how to use the jack and change a tire on your car.
In all of the cases, knowledge is power, and tools used properly can be used to save your life.
Finally, just because you have the knowledge and the tools, doesn't mean you can't hope and pray everyday that you won't need to use them.

Firearms ownership carries enormous responsibility, but I feel it's encumbant of me to proctect myself, and my family...

No I don't think city leaders should encourage gun ownership. I don't have any problems with gun ownership. As a citizen of this country it is my right to make that choice but I don't think it is city leaders place to encourage it one way or another.

We assume that all 'heads-of-households' are responsible, mature adults, who have taken anger management classes, and are always in their 'right' mind?

I Complete Disagree with Greenleaf City ordinace.
Law enforcement officers are educated and highly trained professionals on how and when to use a firearm. The Public is NOT. You can train people to shoot a gun, but you cannot trust all citizens to have the same rational judgement as does trained law enforcement. Too many children and innocent people die each year due to extremely poor and irrational judgement of those who have access to firearms. I suspect Greenleaf is looking for a way to make up for a lack of law enforcement in their community. The more readily available firearms are to the public, the greater the probability more innocent people will Die.

Yes I do! Just because the city encourges it doesn't mean you have to have a gun. A row of houses? You are the criminal, pick the house without a gun. Your call.
Maybe someone should have encouraged her to "have and know how to use a firearm". It just may have saved her life.

Gun control laws only apply to law abiding citizens. The ones misusing firearms (ie. commiting crimes with them) don't care about the law in the first place. Disarming honest citizens will only leave them at the mercy of criminals, who will continue to ignore the law and keep their weapons.
I too live it a rural area that would have a long 911 response time, and I can't rely on law enforcement agencies to "protect" myself and my family.
My children handle firearms safely, and can hit what they shoot at.

Guns are terrible and should not be legal. If there weren't guns, then "good" people wouldn't need them. You can't use violent crime as a reason to own a gun, that doesn't make sense. Two wrongs do not make a right. You all sound like a bunch of whiskey drinking, squirrel eatin', racist hicks.

By all means! People who blame guns for the violence should blame cars for 55,000 deaths a year. A gun is nothing more than a tool meant to be properly used. They are at the control of those who use them. It's people who cause the problems.

Speaking of anger management and prejudice; sounds like Quinn could use a little of one and a lot less of the other. Of course it is all made right by the proper dosage of intollerance. Dyremaekre

Gary & Dyremaekre are correct.

100-200 years ago there really was a whole lot less 'crime.' That was because the neighbors would all band together and shoot your theivin'(?) ass.

This has nothing to do with Greanleaf, However,
it does have somthing to do with Right-To-Carry,
Mayor Nickels of Seattle signed executive order on June 9 of this year prohibiting firearms at Seattle Center, parks, community centers, and city-owned buildings. This ban, does not require review by the City Council and directs that a plan be drawn-up in 30 days to established the prohibition.
This ban is a clear VIOLATION of Washington State's PREEMPTION STATUTES that dictate that only State Legislature can enact laws pertaining to firearms. Because of preemption, the city has no arrest power or authority to fine people under Mayor Nickel's outlandish order.
