An Oregon City couple, who practices Faith Healing, was charged with manslaughter charges in the death of their 15-month-old daughter after the state medical examiner concluded she could have been saved with simple antibiotics. Do you think Parents should be prosecuted for refusing life-saving treatment for their children? 16 CommentsLeave a comment |
They should HANG for their crimes against humanity! If they want to choose to die from an easily curable illness or injury that is fine, no problem; but when it comes to children, let them make up their own mind when they are 18. A parent to make that kind of decision on behalf of their child is gastly, and horrible! Then to compound it by hiding behind the Lord, is really despicible and offensive to a civilized society. Is that what God would really want? C'mon now, that is pure self rightous crazyness and its results, murderous! HANG'EM for MURDER says I!!
I fully believe folks should be allowed to practice faith healing. However. . . conventional medical treatment and assistance should not be avoided, rather it should be used in conjunction with conventional medicine. Letting a child die of preventable causes is just ludicrous and poor parenting. Anyone recall that joke about the guy sitting on his rooftop in a flood, refusing the aid of rescue boats and helicopters? then when he died and asked God why he didnt help, God said I sent you two rescue boats and a helicopter? Faith healing is all well and good, but we need to use all the resources we have available to keep our children healthy and safe. If you want to say it's all up to God, then accept that God gave us the intelligence to figure out medicine and we should use that intelligence and that medicine to keep ourselves healthy.
The purpose of parents in this world is to protect the child and to ensure his survival, not just deliver him and pray he'd survive. The protection means using all means that modern society provides - such as scientific knowledge and medications for illnesses. And as a supplement they may use faith healing. Since these parents are obviously not in the right mind to let their child die their sentence should be reduced. Their church leaders should be responsible as well for extensive brainwashing that led to child's death. If the church does not support life then who will be left to pray?

The parents should absolutely face criminal charges for not utilizing readily available medical services and medication. I know a number of diabetics who have been on medication for many years and they have lived very productive, fulfilling lives. Wish these people would stop reproducing! Wake up - there is no god, you have only one life.
I absolutly think that the parents should be prosecuted !!! How can ANY parent who knows there child is sick ignore it ? That is obsurd !!! There is no way that I would just leave the well being of my sick child in the hands of a strictly "faith healing church" when there are totally healable ways to treat it. Im the parent, isint that my job to take care of my child and and not let them die ? Dont get me wrong, I belive in praying, there are some things that need more than prayer, and unfortunatly, that little girls life was one of them. And its sad to think that there are people out there who think these parents did nothing wrong.
Don't be so severe on the parents. As religious followers, they believed with their whole hearts that the best thing for their child was extensive prayer and faith. From a Christians point of view, I can completely understand that. I would go for the antibiotics in addition to prayer never-the-less, but not all believers work that way. Legally speaking, I don't believe the parents committed a crime and cannot reasonably be prosecuted. They were working to their fullest capacity to assist their child, and are now heartbroken about the result. Legally they cannot be prosecuted, but isn't the guilt enough?
Dear Abby: I believe you are very, very wrong on this issue. "Don't be so severe on the parents" is an absurd statement and so out of touch with reality. A parents sole duty is to do everything in their power to protect their children. Here, these parents FAILED miserably at their duty. It is no differant than the fool who hooked his daughter up to his car and took her sledding and killed her. He too failed his duty to his child. But, these Christians blatently ignored simple life saving measures that would have saved their child. That is neglect in its purest and most lethal form, and their should be consequences for it. Blaming the Lord for not answering their prayers or chalking it up to "God's will" IS CRIMINAL and we should be VERY SEVERE ON THESE WACKED OUT PARENTS!
Help me Jebus here we go again!!!! Does anyone remember the story of Dennis Lindberg a few months back??? The Jehovah Witness' let him die in the name of religion and a judge backed them up!!! So, in this case why should these people be punished? They used their religious beliefs as an excuse to kill just as the Jehovah's did in the Lindberg case. If one got away with it then all should. Maybe this will be a wake up call to the courts and some of 'you' people to actually do something. I went as far to write the governor so don't point at me as if I am not practicing what I preach! If one religion gets away with it then so should they all or are we going to actually do something about it now?!!
Here is the link to the Dennis Lindberg blog that ran from November 28, 2007 to February 7, 2008. Read up and educate yourself on the dangers of religions in America!!!
Freedom from religion!!!!

S810, the difference is, the boy who was sick was old enough to say he didnt want the medical treatment and the treatment may or may not have actually healed him but it sure would have made his time here unpleasant. Basicly I saw his case as a choice, possibly a suicide choice, but his choice to make, and I for one dont believe suicide should be illegal. What these parents did was not the same as the JW case. In the JW case they were supporting their sons choice. In this case, they just watched their baby die without trying anything more than prayer to make the baby better when medicines and doctors care was just a quick car trip away.
Saera, at least take the time to read through the blog site I sent to 'catch yourself up' on the facts of the Lindberg case. Dennis was not the son he was the nephew, Dennis said "more people want me to die than live so I guess I choose death" plus so much more that went on that you are not aware of. Read through the blog and educate yourself! There are too many factors involved you need to read about before you take the 'lazy' way out and just come to a quick conclusion. Bottom line is religion killed Dennis and now it has killed an infant. No difference in that! Yes, the circumstances weren't exact but both did not have a choice BECAUSE OF RELIGION!!! If you feel sorry for this latest case then you need to help change the laws that people can kill in the name of religion. This whole case as well as Dennis' were deaths caused by religion and how people hide behind their faith to commit these atrocities! Educate yourself BEFORE you come to your next conclusion.
Alas, I dont tend to put much trust in the truth of blogs. The news articles (which arent ironclad truth either but tend to be more accurate) stated it was his choice. Be it son or nephew, if he made the choice and his guardian supported him in his choice. so be it. If it was proven that the guardian forced the decision, then I would see these cases as much more similar and prosecution appropriate in both accounts.
Ugh! Saera, again I say if you read the blog you will find first hand accounts from people that were there. In fact I was one of them and I assure you I am being honest.
As I beat this dead horse and look up to read your last entry I just mark this one off once again as a lazy, ignorant person who chooses to believe what they want to believe whether it is fact or fiction. If you put your faith in today's media as you stated then I know I am dealing with one more (dictionary definition) 'ignorant' person.
I wish you luck and us with people like you voting for our future! Ugh!
This is actually quite funny, though of course veering off topic. I should believe a blog where people can sign up as whatever name they want and believe whatever is posted there OVER believing the news? As I said I dont even believe the news that much, but it has a bit more accountability than a generic blog. I hope it makes you feel better calling me ignorant and uninformed for reading the news. Of course where does that put you also reading the news but believing blogs more? Best wishes to you either way.
