President Bush, in his final State of the Union address, is urging passage of an anti-recession plan, saying that "we can all see that growth is slowing."
President Bush, standing before Congress one last time, is urging the nation to stay confident against gnawing recession fears.
Bush is calling on lawmakers to urgently approve a 150 billion dollar plan -- worked out with House leaders -- to stave off recession through tax rebates for families and incentives for businesses to invest in new plants and equipment.
And he's calling on lawmakers not to load up the bill with add-ons that would delay or derail the bill. Senate Democrats want to expand the economic rescue plan with rebates for senior citizens living off Social Security and extensions of unemployment benefits for the jobless.
Do you agree with President Bush's assessment of the State of the Union?

The President wrong about so many things. Rep. Brian Baird was right, by investing in the infrastructure we can repair our failing roads, bridges, and power grid and make an immediate economic impact. At the same time we could loan money to a windmill manufacturer to open a plant in Michigan, stimulating the economy there. The loan would be safe, because we could gaurantee all of their products would be sold to build massive wind farms in the midwest, supplying the US with renewable emission free energy. A similar investment could me made in solar technology. I'm ready for a President with vision, the only good thing about this speech is that it will be his last SotU Address.

He's glossing over the problems so he can continue to support the war effort, where he's spending the lion's share of the money we could be using for our own citizenry here at home. And to give every taxpayer a rebate that we don't have in the treasury, show's that he's willing to print money now at the expense of future generations.
It proves that we'll need a true fiscal conservative next time to arrest the deficit insome meaningful way.

As expressed in comments above, it's become so easy to blame our President for all our national woes. I wonder how much we would be paying for gas if President Bush had not led us into war with Iraq. All of our Congress has to share in the blame for the financial condition we find ourselves in. We are fooling ourselves if we think by electing "a new President with vision", all our troubles will be over. Passing the 150 billion anti-recession bill might help some people with a little cash, but it won't put an end to our financial troubles. We need to make a serious effort to cutback spending, reduce our national debt, re-invest in the dollar by allowing people to become responsible citizens instead of allowing so many people to receive a "free" handout. Every American, including illegal aliens, should be held accountable to bare the weight of the responsibility of living in this "land of the free." My greatest fear is that Americans have become so accustomed to living irresponsibly that we no longer possess the ability to recover. How will we live if/when China becomes our new "owner"? They already own the 'lion share' of our US treasury bonds. Perhaps it will take a new oppressor to teach us the real meaning of "freedom" once again...

You could run Satin as a Democrat and it would be a landslide against any Republican this time. How come Bush gets to finish out his term? Hinkley's out of prison now. This election will show the greatest Republican defeat in history just because of Bush.

Where is all the tax money going? There isn't any tax money left, that is why we are borrowing from Japan to fund this needless war and make stupid laws to pay for the loss, like not smoking in own vehicles.
