A judge in Colfax, WA sentenced Former fugitive Frederick Russell to 14 years and three months in prison for causing a traffic accident that killed three Washington State University students. Russell was convicted in November of three counts of vehicular homicide for the 2001 crash on the highway between the college towns of Pullman, WA, and Moscow, ID. The judge told Russell, "you are going to get the maximum sentence under the law, because you deserve it." Do you agree with the sentence? 13 CommentsLeave a comment |
I'm just kind of amazed that killing 3 people and then fleeing the country to avoid jail ONLY gets you 14 years. I am just suprised that that is the "maximum".
that seems light for even one death let alone 3. well he is still reasonably young so im thinking some lonely guy in that prison is bound to slap some lipstick on him and call him sweetie.
he is bound to be walking a bit lopsided when he eventually gets out.
I was attending school at WSU when Russell took the lives of those young students. It made me angry then and it makes me angry now to see him only get 14 years. Our system needs to change. Drug dealers get more time than that. It is rediculous. What angers me even more is his father "was" a Criminal Justice professor at WSU and the father's student drove Russell to Canada to flee. This young lady served 2 years for aiding his escape but the father never did any time. I am sure he helped Frederick financially as well as tell him how to escape the US and probably paid his student to help drive him out of the country. At least we now have partial justice. Lets go after the father now to make sure that low-lifes are where they belong, in prison.
To think he only got 14 years 3 months for taking 3 lives while in the commission of a crime..DUI..is another crime in/of itself. Why such a light sentence when at least on some level he knew what he was doing was wrong? Then the person or persons that assisted his fleeing the country to escape justice, I was under the impression that aiding and abedding was a crime punishable by nearly the same as the crime itself?
It should be our greatest focus, getting people who choose to drink/drive off the streets in protection of the future Washingtonians!
It is about time the maximum sentence is given. He deserves far more for all of the pain he has caused all of the family and friends of the victims (pain has a domino affect and reaches so many people related to those taken from us in such a tragic way). My heart goes out the the victims families for the pain they have to carry the rest of their lives for the empty spaces that are in their hearts. Frederick Russell showed no respect for life and no genuine remorse for what he has done. Perhaps when he is serving his time he should look into making others more aware of the affects of drinking and driving (it is a choice and he chose to be stupied and drive after drinking - - now he must live with the choice he made). My heart goes out to the families and friends of the victims, I too have felt your pain as I lost my sweet husband to a drunk driver. THIS BEHAVIOR NEEDS TO STOP!!
So that others know, the penalty in this case was 14 years for each of the three deaths and something less than that for the assaults (for the injured). The problem is that, in this state, all of those sentences get to be served concurrently rather than consecutively (as in some other states).
As the father of Stacy Morrow, who Frederick Russell killed in this crash, I can only hope that others are really learning from this. Drinking then driving is illegal in this state. The consequences are life changing and life ruining and you cannot, in any way, take it back or properly make amends once that terrible one split second happens.
STOP thinking "I'm OK" "I'm fine" "I know what I'm doing" "I must be good at this because I have done it so many times and nothing bad has ever happened."
START thinking "I am going to do the right thing, no matter how hard it is, so that this will never happend to me and my family and so many others."
Continue to push the envelope and it will happen to you. You could end up facing Judge Frazier yourself someday, wishing that you had listened and had not ruined so many lives, yours included.
He took off out of the country not caring about the people he killed. Trying to get away from the fact that he was responsible for thier deaths, not taking the people who he affected by his actions into concideration. ONLY CONCERN WAS HIMSELF!
Please remember that Marriage is a lifetime commitment and averages about 10 years, and in jail, Life terms usually only mean 10 years, so Mr. Russell is actually getting more than a life sentence for this untimely termination of several life sessions.
After all, murder is just extroverted suicide, and his cry for help just happened to be a 2000 lb car and some alcohol.
R.I.P, Ryan, Stacy and Brandon, love you all, and to those who made it, hope your all doing well and moving on in life, all the best Jason Olson.......Miss you tons Ryan........
I tend to be a forgiving sort, but when it comes to drunk driving with horrendous results such as in this case I have no sympathy for someone who finds himself in Russell's situation. Actually, here in Alaska and most places I think these days, he'd be looking at a lot more than 14 years....even without the fleeing to Ireland part. I have no sympathy because there's not a single person alive these last 25 years or so who doesn't realize the risks. Here in Alaska, back when perhaps some degree of drinking and driving was accepted 30 years or so back......but everyone now knows society is not sending out mixed messages, and everyone knows about the toll drunk driving takes. So Russell just didn't care. And we shouldn't care about him.
14 years 3 months for taking 3 lives? Should have moved his case to Oklahoma. I read in their newspaper that one woman was sentenced to 20 years for "ATTEMPTED MURDER"
the only thing Fred Russell is sorry for is he finally got caught and is paying the price---we citizens of Washington must demand of our senators and representatives to make our lenght of time spent in prison for this such crime a heck of lot longer than 14 yrs for 3 people and not counting those that were hurt.
14 yrs for each death and 7 for each injury would be amble.
But, our state is soft on crimminals to say the least. sure wished I could be judge for a month with good strong laws--some of these felons would be shark bait!!!!!
Sinners should also be put to death because that is the penalty, right?
Wrong. Not sure what the answer would be to reverse time. Maybe Mother Nature should be indicted...actually I'm quite sure that should happen.
