Should the U.S. consider a military draft?

I don't see where this country has any choice. Those who are currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan desperately need a rest. Very few young people would willingly join the military during a war, especially a war that the majority of the people of this country consider wrong. Unless we start pulling our troops out of combat areas within the next 6-12 months, we aren't going to have a military--we're going to have a bunch of people who are so exhausted and stressed that they are going to be making fatal mistakes.

I don't want a draft. I am a third generation proud veteran. But I don't want my son to be called up to fight a war that is based on lies. And it would truly kill me to have to bury him for one man's ego trip.

We may not want to reinstate the draft, but I don't see where we can prosecute two wars indefinitely without a draft.

Yes, The draft should be re-instituted. I served in Vietnam, and one year tour of duty is enough for any soldier to serve his country. Not only will the draft be good for the wonderful soldiers now that are doing more than one tour, but will make men out of these young men that we have currently in this country who don't become real men till their thirty or thirty five. They will be boys going in and real men coming out.............Wally J. Gomez

A lot of my family has served in the military. I have a 22 yr old brother trying to get in to the army or marines. The problem is the Army will not take him because his test score is 2 points lower then the want so they keep giving him the run around. The Marines are willing to take him but they are waiting for a waiver because he has tattoos. In my opinion the United States needs to take people that want to go in before doing a force tactic on people.

I am a mother of a 18 year old son and a aunt of a 19 year old nephew, this is not vetnam an we don't want this war any I don't understand why they are even consedering it I just hope it doesn't cause a revalution in America, us mother don't want our boys to get killed for a war we didn't want and don't want we want our boys over there to come home as it is. JULIE COLLINS P.S MY LITTLE BROTHER IS A MARINE WHO HAS ALREADY GONE OVER THERE ONCE BUT IS HOME AND WE WANT HIM TO STAY TOO.

I believe there should be mandatory military training for all citizens, male and female. Also all the illegals in our country who want the benefits we have to offer. It should be designed that no one is exempt. I am a veteran and believe that service would also have an effect on many undesirable parts of our society.

All that should happen right now is to get the people who are already in Iraq out and not just provoke a longer war! We've been in there long enough and I don't want to have to worry about more of my family than I already am. We are all too worried as it is and it just wouldn't end well if we resorted to force.

Susan said:

No Draft, Absolutely Not! This is an illegal war that was wrong from the start, that more of our young men and women could be sent to die in this debacle is unthinkable. I will be out in the streets protesting if they institute one !!!!!

make men out of them? how about post stressed cripples? i assume you came home with all arms and legs? we cant take proper care of the current wounded let alone more. ww2 was a war we had to fight but like the others said this is over a bunch of lies. bush has said you are either with him or you are with them well i havnt been with him since before the first election and as far as i am concerned all of you who voted for him have the blood of thousands of our young on your hands.

A completely insane proposal! Offensive, in fact!!

Yes! Round up all illegal aliens and draft them to serve in Iraq for 2 years. After two years, if they survive, send them back to where they came from. Just don't draft any native born sons to go fight an illegal political war. At least in Viet Nam, it was political and we knew who the enemy was, but in Iraq it has turned religious and no one know who the enemy is lurking behind the next sand dune.
A draft will complete the comparison of Iraq to Viet Nam. How many young men will we have to sacrafice in order to come to the realization that there is no solution to this conflict?
The US missed their big opportunity to pull out the day that Sadam was hanged. All they had to say was, we did what we came here to do - goodbye. The big excuse is that we are aborting a civil war. What's so bad about that. If they are fighting each other, they will not have time to come over here and bother us.

I hope so!! That way we can just add another lie to Bush's resume'! Not to mention maybe a draft is what it will take to get you lazy Americans off your asses and away from your tv's and actually do something about the politicians who are ruining our country! I agree with earlier post, I too blame all you Bush voters and supporters for the deaths of our soldiers in this illeagal oil war. Don't wait for the draft sign your own kids up now!!!

Saera said:

How on earth could a draft help? Sending a bunch of folks into a war they dont believe in, with guns they dont want, enslaved by our own military to risk their lives and sanity in a foreign country for a government they really wont be liking or respecting after such an atrocity as a draft, if they liked it much at all before just due to this pompus illegal war. This whole thing just continues Bush's dictator stand he's had from the beginning. Why dont we just send Bush and his lackies over there to fight instead? Give them basic training, basic gear, and toss them on the battle field. See how they feel about being forced to go fight in a war when they are the ones face to face with people who dont want us there, who want us dead. No armed security for you, you are the security.

Andy Wong said:

Yes there should be a draft if there is an actual "war" over in Iraq. All there is over there is a conflict thats all. A draft would be silly when it's not even a war.

I am for the draft for young adults just graduating from high school that don't have a set date for college, that will not help with a family owned busness or does not know what they want to do with their life. The draft will give them something to and might keep a few away from the life of crime.

Bill A. said:

We live in one of the few countries where people don't give anything back to their country. Everyone should serve in some regard; military, feeding homeless, building bridges and trails, etc. All, even handicapped, should give 2 years to their country following HS graduation or upon quitting school. No exemptions for anyone.

Caleb said:

NO! Not now. Not ever.

I commend the soldiers who have made the choice to enlist. That's the keyword, they made the choice!!!!! I am not willing to send my sons to fight a war that I (and they don't believe in). We should have been out of there a long time ago. How many dead Americans will Bush consider worth his ego. And for all those who think that just because a young man doesn't know what he wants to do with his life - it should be his choice whether he wants to die in a war that is questionable to say the least. Maybe if the military can not get enough people to fight this war it should be a wake up call!!!!!!!

The idea of Americans not being able to pay their house payments sends stock markets all over the world reeling. I wonder what would happen if a draft was put in place?

A draft is extremely frightening for everyone,
my two oldest sons are 10yrs and 8yrs old. I am not sure where they learned about the selective service but they both told me that they were going to move to Canada so they did not have to fill out one of those cards. And they were serious. Both of them were very upset. My oldest said that he did not want to die for nothing. I was shocked, I had to explain what those cards were for and they were only used if there was a draft, and that the war would be over by the time they were 18....hopefully.

Tina Heinle said:

War, what is it good for?

Absolutely nothing!

This is just ridiculous. America got sucked into a war that wasn't our business. Just because bush sr. got dissed by saddam, and bush jr. wanted to get saddam for it. This war has absolutely nothing to do with the war on terror. If the USA would have been a little patient they could have figured out where the terrorist were before this whole mess started.
Absolutely NO, they should not restart the draft.
Take out boys and girls outta there now!

tom said:

Yes, bring back the draft- if you support the war you should support any effort it takes to win the war- look around how many people support the war and yet have nothing to lose from it or have done nothing in making a sacrafice to support the war effort- we have become an entitlement nation - the people with the power and money make the decisions and the people without the power and money do the dirty work. Look at Mitt Romney equating his sons on the campaign trail doing the same duties as a soldier in Irag or Afganistan- No one in this nation other than the soldiers and families of the soldiers have made any sacrifices - look at the report on the VA system and how badly the returning soldiers are treated - again only the soldiers and famlies are sacrificing anything

can any one explain to me what the difference between the people saddam killed and the ones we are killing? when pat tillman was killed how many believed they didnt want the truth told about that? this president lies to the world invades another country killing tens of thousands and tramples all over our constitution so where is ken starr and his impeachment? he thought clinton deserved to be impeached for his indescretion? clinton got grilled over it for the whole world to see yet bush exercises his executive priveleage time after time. this whole thing stinks from beginning to end.

Alice Gilbert said:

As a member of the WWII generation, I am all for the whole nation answering the call for service when the nation is threatened and for making the sacrifices necessary to win that war. BUT this is a war of choice, started by military and executive branches that colossally bungled it from the very beginning. They also put off the massive war debt to be paid by future generations so that currently wealthy citizens could enjoy a tax cut. No sacrifice here, except for the troops themselves. If the troops don't have what they need - "well you go to war with the Army you have." Don't properly fund vet health services until you're exposed by the media. Keep on rotating the Reserve until they drop. Above all, ignore the country when it tells you in a November election that its citizens don't want this war.

Well, if the same military and executive branches that started this misbegotten war can't now find a good way to end it and want to prolong it by instituting a miliary draft, I predict an EXPLOSION of civil disobedience. If the countries two biggest draft dodgers, Bush and Cheny, want to send their daughters into the fight, they are free to do so but they can stay away from my loved ones. If enough of us stand up and shout it, the military and executive will have to face up to their mistakes because they don't have enough fodder to keep feeding into the destructive Iraq maw.

Everyday I wake up and think what could Chucklenuts administration do today to rape the American people?

The draft?

Go ahead Bushie, try it. I dare you.

Laurie said:

I don't beleive in anything about this war. America is always sticking there noses in other countries business and our sons and daughters are paying the price with their lives that has nothing to do with us. I NEVER want the draft to be reinstated! Would this mean Bushs' daughters would be sent to Iraq as well? Would they have to enlist? I think not! Too many families have had their lives ruined and lost so many loved ones, it is just wrong!

what a bunch of morons and tree huggers... do you think that this country was just given to us? It was fought for, bled over, and people died so that our generation of overwieght video playing juveniles can sit and whine and hear the parents bashing the government. I believe that all people out of high school should do a mandatory 2 years in the military. As a veteran i know that between the years right after high school are a "tween" age. The military teaches you to becomes mature, physically fit and gives you career opportunities when you get out. I applaud our veterans, granted it is a crappy situation in Iraq. They are following orders. Most of you must not believe in world war 1 or 2, and the mass murdering of prisoners and civilians alike. If we are not vigilent and progressive we will be taken over and when the citizens rise up and call for the military to save them, there won't be any. Like with most whiners in this country, we all want to be home and bitch and moan and not get off your ass to do a thing. Guess you like to hear your own voice, but their are a few of us who don't want to hear you - we are tired of the minorities crying all the time. Grow up and be productive, or cross the mexican border and take up residence there. whoops - never mind - Mexico would not tolerate a u.s. citizen crossing illegally into their country to live. Guess we are farther lost than i thought

A draft- I think under any other circumstance a draft may serve a minute purpose. However, in this day and age a conscription would not benefit us, but actually hurt us. When our soldiers return home from their tours, they don't immediately go back to their pre-service lives. In fact, many, not all, find themselves battling demons with visions of death and loss. This takes away from the economy that we as Americans fought hard to maintain. Where many men and women can deal with the emotional sides of combat, there are countless others who are forced into irrational decision. And this is just referring to those who returned "healthy". But what about those who are injured every single day oversees? We are not even capable of dealing with their health issues. The VA reported nearly 400,000 pending applications for veteran's benefits. The sad thing is this number doesn't change much from year to year. And if that isn't enough, the veteran's budget isn't increasing at a rate capable to care for those veterans who can't immediately join the job market upon return. In their eyes, health is defined only in a physical sense (eyes, legs, arms) and doesn't consider the mental state, in most cases, of an individual soldier.
We were led to believe this is a war on terror. Then we were led to believe this was a war to give people the civil rights that were removed by a tyrant. What happened to the Militant organization that terrorized us on 9/11? That had nothing to do with Iraq and Saddam. Yet we are still Spending a billion a week for occupation overseas to rebuild a country and give their citizens civil rights. If this was about civil rights, we should be destroying Saudi Arabia. They have just as many if not more "civil rights" infractions as Iraq. But we are friends with them so it is OK if they force their women to hide their faces and stone people in the street for showing too much skin.
This is a war of Pride and Control, but I digress.
So is a Draft necessary? No. Would a draft make men of the youth in America? Probably. If we sent our drafted youth into a war, would they return home to an angry public and a non-supporting government? Absolutely.
I love this country and am a very proud American citizen. But i am sick of the lies and sick of the behind-the-door handshakes which make the rich even richer at the expense of our citizens.
Alas, this isn't about Republicans or Democrats. It is about who we elect to represent us. Unfortunately, it takes between 100-400 million dollars to run a presidential campaign. Quite fitting, I would say, to see rich white businessmen make decisions which benefit their companies and their friends. I mean, its like free advertising.

ABSOULTELY NOT, NO MANDITORY DRAFT!!!!!!!!! WE NEED TO TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN HERE IN THE USA AND STOP ALL THIS KILLING. I AM A GROWN CHILD OF A RETIRED MARINE. IAM AM VERY PROUD OF MY DAD, BUT VIET NAM DESTROIED HIM AND THAT NEEDS TO STOP....

Sam said:

Yes, let's bring back the draft, but the rules need to be a little different than the previous draft. Rule 1: Women and men are treated equally by the draft. Rule 2: Politicians and Generals sons and daughters get drafted first. Rule 3: After the sons and daughters of Politicians and Generals, the sons and daughters of the rich and wealthy are next (as an inverse function of the parents net worth). Then we work on the sons and daughters of the oil barons and company CEOs/CIOs of defense contractors. I would bet these policies would get us out of this war in very short order.
