Safeco Insurance unveiled a new device which could allow parents to track their teens anytime and anywhere. The GPS- based system called "Teen-surance" can be installed on a teen's car. It allows parents to track that car's location. It also monitors speed and transmits alerts to parents by cell phone, email or text message. Do you think this is an invasion of privacy? 8 CommentsLeave a comment |
This is great news for parents! Let me be the first to sign up! It is not just to insure my daughter remains accountable but will also help to insure her safety. I suppose there will be those who will condemn it, but there will always be those who hate accountability. "Way To Go Safeco"
I do not think that it's an invasion of privacy if you are putting it into a vehicle driven by your teen. MORE parents need to be accountable for their children's actions. If you can see your teen is consistently speeding or driving into areas where they should not be, then it is the parent's responsibility to put a stop to that activity. This will be another tool to help parents do the right thing and keep track of their kids.
outstanding - having 4 daughters i see this as a blessing and a reassurance. Now i might feel better when they start going out at night.
Guess the ACLU will sue because it does make sense
Hmmm, I am noticing a trend here. My view against this subject was not posted... yet, anyone for this Safeco tracking seems to get posted.
This looks like a clear case of selective sampling to me, and will be a topic subject at my forum here tomorrow.
Shame on you NWCN!

The ACLU won't sue because it makes sense. The ACLU will sue because it will soon lead Insurance companies to want these installed on all vehicles to get the best insurance rates. Then the ACLU will cry "foul" that this is infringing on our basic human rights. Pretty soon Big Brother will be watchng us all because we have tracking devises all over the place because we are just too dumb to take care of ourselves.
Does it make parents feel better to be able to keep track of their kids? Sure. Does it open the door for further interference in our private lives by Big Government? Sure, but that's what Republicans do. Democrats try to increase taxes for everything and Republicans want to be able to set up shop inside our homes so that they can monitor what we do.
Come on people, don't be so short sighted.

what a great device for insurance companies to use to get out of spending any cash on paying customers. they'll just say 'not our problem, this said you were speeding (probably hydroplaning tires), or this said you havent done your car maintenance on time, or something.
If you dont trust your kid, dont give them the opportunity to leave the house. if you dont trust them to drive, dont let them have a vehicle or borrow yours without your being in it. Stalking our children doesnt help us be better parents. The ones wanting this are likely the ones that just want to not have to actually ask the kids where they are or actually pay attention to them. So unless they get a text message or email stating they were somewhere they werent supposed to be, they dont need to bother to parent.
its one thing to have a gps device on folks while hiking in the woods where they can get lost, or in your kids watch when theyre little and can easily get nabbed or lost (if you let them out of your sight to begin with), but quite another to track 'kids' old enough to drive and that need to learn to be responsible adults for themselves, not only responsible because mommy and daddy may ground them.
Not a good idea imo.
Do the Amish need this for their children when they go out in their buggies? Besides the fact that they do not use telephones, and the fact that the buggies don't go that fast, could it be that they might have a greater amount of parental participation and responsibility?
