I do not seen an issue with allowing them to become teachers, they would come to the class room with a knowledge that most teachers dont have, Issues of the real world!! The draw of the lies of quick money, or the pull of drugs. These women have that knowledge and can pass it on to older children giving them insite into what they can become by staying in school.

They have proven that they have changed their lives around. They deserve another chance.

I am married to a man with a masters degree and 5-plus years of teaching experience who can't get a teaching job because his degrees are in history and Oregon does not have a history credential. How ironic. Now we want to let prostitutes teach.
But we have to hire nurses from overseas because we can't subsidize welfare mothers to go to college. Maybe we should level the playing field here.

I think by allowing these individuals to become teachers it would open the door for other groups of " reformed criminals " to apply, and eventually succeed in getting teacher jobs. One too many times you see on the news where Child Molesters are allowed to be teachers, and around children because they " slipped through the cracks." I think the idea is absolutely great. I am a former teacher. I believe every person who has committed to turning her life around is a most valuable type of teacher because that person has walked her talk - been to hell and recovered. Five years is a fantastic accomplishment in the world of recovery. (The recovery rate for substance abuse/addiction is far less than five years. And it is certain that any school has addicted persons on staff as well as persons in recovery.) This bill should be passed.

Yes, let a prostitute teach! Would we prefer that a prostitute remain in this undesirable trade? Would we prefer that the prostitute choose a new career? For example, choosing a mutually beneficial (for society and the individual) type of career, perhaps a teacher.

So long as they have no history of child molestation or sexual abuse, have the proper credentials and training, and get no special treatment over other qualified individuals for the jobs, I see no problem with it. We need to do more for our low income and rough past citizens to be able to get training and get real jobs. I would want to make sure their teaching techniques were just as appropriate as any other teachers, but how can we expect people to change thier old ways and become something else if we dont help and allow them the opportunity.

For the real life training of our children (if theyre going to share some of that at all), I think they would be best suited to teach older kids. It really shouldnt matter what a persons former jobs were to become a teacher or a nurse or whatever, so long as those former jobs dont risk endangering those they are working with (or themselves) in the future. ie, dont have a former druggie working in a pharmacy or as a nurse. too much risk of relaps etc. No child molesters in contact with children, but they could work as a bank teller or in an office somewhere.

I think it is a wonderful idea, but don't limit it to teaching. We should training all of our reformed felons with the skill they will need to succeed once released. These individual have great difficulty finding work which makes it easier to turn back to crime to make a living.

My brother is a teacher and he worked his butt off to get there. It's not easy, and I don't really see where there would be a problem... If an ex- prostitute wants to become a teacher...and they go through the same educational & interview process everyone else goes through, they deserve a chance!

I agree with Oregons law - as long as they keep their past out of the class room they shouldn't be penalized for their past - they should be praised for turning their life around----besides their johns aren't penalized for using prostitues many of these guys are husbands, teachers ,doctors,buisness men and on and on.....

I think it's a really good idea for these women to teach. With all the violence and drugs in school maybe having someone with streets smarts along with an education will let them spot potentual trouble and head it off. These women have had to stay sharp to get where they are and having a teacher who can really explain the reason a kid needs to learn instead of hitting the streets just might keep a few more kids in school.

Wouldn't it be a bit distracting to the students knowing that their teacher was a hooker? Would they respect her more or less? In any case, they would be experts in teaching Sex Ed...

(ES yeah because he would then be a productive member of society)......that is my point. Well, if we don't want former prostitutes teaching our children, apparently, there are three teachers in Oregon who are now looking for work.

2 teachers, the article said that one is planning on still working. that would be a twist to maybe have a gay teacher pick up AIDS in a park from a registerd sex offender then pass it onto a under age student. its just a matter of time.

Well we could have them continue in their trade of prositution, or move on to something legal, and respectable. If they aren't murder's, child molesters, abusive, or nuts, I say they should be able to get any job they want. The students don't have to know about their past. I'm sure every single person has someone in their family somewhere who has done something illegal and been in jail. Should we not let anyone who's been in jail have any type of job except fast food? Come on, get real, people turn their lives around all the time, and they should be given a chance just like everyone else.

It's not what we do that defines who we are, it's how we handle what we do that defines us. A person who feels strongly enough to change their life so dramatically for the better definitely deserves as equal a chance as the next person. A person with dignity, character, and self respect has undoubtedly made a few mistakes in their life that they have learned a lesson or two from. Those lessons are what create the wise, worldly people with common sense. Those people won't be interested in a career that would violate their parol! They will be interested in living a truely better life; one they can be proud of. A life they can take with them to the pearly gates and say "I did make mistakes, I learned from those mistakes and made a conscious effort to better my life."

If prostitution were legal as it should be this question would not even exist it would simply be a career change. Think about it a person who uses their body for a living in many other ways besides sex does not face crimuinal charges. If it were legal more women would not need the streets and pimps who exploit them they would make great money pay taxes and could put themself through college and lets face it there will never be a shortage of clients. Just ask hiedi fliess or the DC madam. Consensual sex between adults is not the governments bussiness regardless of money changing hands. The government should just collect the taxes and stay out of the bedroom!
