Campus Shooting

The woman who was shot and killed today on the University of Washington campus had a restraining order against the man who shot her.

Do you think campus police could have done more to protect her? Do restraining orders work?

From what I've heard, restraining orders dont particularly help. Its a light deterrant, not much more. you have to be fully prepared and have your friends also prepared to call the cops at the drop of a hat if the 'restrained' party shows up, and hope youre faster on the call and the cops are faster at coming than the angry person with the restraining order is at coming to get you.

Restraining orders are not worth the paper they are written on or the time it takes to fill one out--especially when the cops are male & the person who needs to be restrained is also male!!!

What does the gender of the cops or restrained have to do with anything? You saying male cops dont bust down on male criminals? That seems a bit odd.

Restraining orders are only effective if the person they are served to has respect for the law. It's a piece of paper. That piece of paper will not physically keep someone from doing something if they intend to. Saera is correct that you must constantly be vigilant and ready to call the police in case the served person shows up.

My daughter's abusive former boyfriend was served and we lived with the fear of his violence for two years before he finally decided to move on. Sadly, probably to end up terrorizing someone else. The police were kind and supportive towards my daughter and family. They were men. The court system is another story...

Restraining orders and protection orders DON'T work.....The idea for these orders is great, but as in one of the other comments, they only work for those that respect and obey the laws. I have first hand knowledge that neither of these work. If someone wants to take you out, all they have to do is know where you work, live or visit and then follow you and "boom" lights out. Then the perpertrator gets caught (hopefully) but all they get is a slap on the hand or sent to jail. If jail is the result, they get a roof over their head, meals served to them, TV, and many other amenities. Great justice system!

First the NWCN anchor says: "No words can describe. For more lets go to Melissa Martin in Virginia". (So there's plenty of words apparently.)

Amazingly enough Melissa Martin was smiling ear-to-ear! How can a person smile on a day like this when she's reporting this kind of news?

Could it be more obvious that she's numb to death and violence and certainly has no relatives on the campus?

It's not a panda being born at the zoo or a squirrel on water skis Ms. Martin it's 32 people shot dead.

I guess violence just pervades this culture. We're exporting it in movies and war. For her this is just her big day beaming live across the country as a correspondant and she might be imagining: 'This is just like a movie!'

Pretty awful, the events of yesterday. The jerks should have shut everything down when the first shooting occurred. Idiots! For the 2nd shootings, they are to blame......they were too busy with their thumbs up their asses!

They say that the shooter exhibited behavior such as setting fire to his dorm room.....if people saw this, why didn't anyone do something about it? Are people too busy examining their bellybuttons to think of the world around them????

It's in times of death that you realize how much for granted we take those that are dear to us. Any one of us can go in a split second.....there are things more important than having "the house", "the job", "the car", "the things". You may have all of those things but if you don't have family and friends....they are meaningless. All of the "things" that is being done now is "too little, too late".
