Many states have recently banned over-the-counter products that contain an ingredient used in meth.
Do you think this ban is punishing the wrong people?

YES. Those of us with sinus issues must submit to giving our id, our time and hopefully the pharmacy is open. all for some relief. Very irksome.

Meth is a corrosive substance. There are many products that have their useful purposes, but require some sort of id process because of their invovlment with something more destructive. I think this just shows the seriousness of the problem. However, I do think it may be a little extreme. Where does big brother stop and give people their "God" given right to freedom and free will. It's sad people use it to destroy themselves.
I do say stiffer punishment to those that make meth, and better treatment for users.

aside from making countless millions from this stuff what have the drug companies done to correct this mess?
stop selling it?
rehab for the addicts?
pay for the haz mat teams used to clean up the meth labs?
bury the dead?
compensate the victems?
even if the US did ban it nation wide are the same drug companies who have been profiting from this all along just going to sell it over the counter in other countries like canada and mexico?

I think it is time that the authorities quit punishing the law-abiding citizens for the actions of criminals. I would like to be able to purchase a legal OTC medication without being treated like a criminal. When are the lawmakers going to realize that criminals will always find ways to do what they want to do and the only thing they are doing is making life just that much harder on those of us who do not break the law. Something has to change. Why not try actually catching these criminals and putting them behind bars instead of treating EVERYBODY like a criminal?

Since the removal of these products from store shelves, the local meth lab production has decreased exponentially. Go to Costco...where a legitimate need will be met with enough medicine to make the trip worthwhile. This poison has to be stopped and if this measure helps I'm more than willing to put up with a small amount of inconvienience. An ounce of prevention, in this case, is worth a TON of cure!

if you have on going health issues shouldnt you go to a doctor and get a prescription anyway? self diagnosis and self medicating i dont think is such a good idea, look how well letting the people buy as much alcohol as they want has worked.
it used to be if you got a headache take an aspirin but now look at all this stuff. who besides a doctor can read the label and understand what it is.
personally i think the families of the meth addicts and other victems of it should file a class action suit against the drug companies for not taking a more active roll in controlling thier product.

Oh please, telling people who have allergies or sinus issues that they shouldn't be self-medicating and comparing them to alcoholics?
I do believe that there should be restrictions on the purchase of whatever ingredients are used to make meth but the wrong people are being penalized. I don't mind standing in line for 15 minutes to purchase my allergy medication (although it can be frustrating), I don't mind having to pull out my I.D. so the store can record all of the necessary information and check that I'm not purchasing massive quantities of the medicine but please can I at least purchase one month's worth? The medicine's package used to contain that month's worth but now only contains two-week's worth.
I live quite a long way from town and would really like to be able to purchase the medicine when I have to make a trip to town while running multiple errands rather than making a special trip just for medicine. Once last year I needed to make a trip into town about a week after I had purchased some allergy meds and decided that I might as well purchase my next two-weeks supply. After standing in line for another 15 minutes (Costco) I finally made it up to the counter to be told that they wouldn't sell it to me because not enough time had passed. It's frustrating to have to make a special trip into town the day before I run out of medicine.
I don't know how much allergy medicine is needed to make meth but it seems as though there must be a better way to control this substance.

my responce to TW and the inconvenience is go to the doctor and get a prescription and have it mailed to your home. the whole system cant be changed just to cater to your own personal needs.
this all goes back to rules we all get victemized by every day. it allways comes down to a few to ruin it for everybody.

It is inconvenient, but only mildly. One pharmacist I was speaking to wondered why the pharmaceutical companies havent just added some inert substance to sudafed to make it unusable by meth labs. He said it had been done with other drugs before that had the same issue and it worked lovely. But until then, the meth problem has gotten better since this minor inconvenience was instated and, to me, thats well worth having to buy my sinus medications at the pharmacy instead. Though I do wish they would stop with the look alike worthless sinus meds that have the pretend sudafed in them. I so seldom need to use sinus meds like that, I've mistakenly grabbed one of the fake ones and just wasted my money since they do no more good than drinking some more caffeen for drying up the sinuses.

The sad truth is, there will always be meth users, no matter if there's a huge lawsuit or not.
As far as the minor inconvenience of taking a card up to a pharmacist and showing my ID to obtain cold medicine goes, I don't mind it one bit. Whatever the measure taken to curb the meth problem is fine with me.

Every day countless lives are destroyed by this terrible drug. I have seen friends and family lose everything in pursuit of one more hit. It is disgusting to see people make a consious decision to injest something that they know will, not only destroy their cognitive brain function but also permanently damage their bodies.
I too am a sufferer of chronic sinus infections and have found the new OTC substitutes have very little effect on bringing me relief. Although I think this ban on OTC Pseudoephedrine is a step in the right direction, it doesn't really solve the core problem. Sure it prevents new meth labs from being able to start, by this I mean a high school kid that wants to impress his friends. However, those who have been manufacturing meth for many years do not need the cold medicine to synthesize their product.
The problem is Addiction in general. You can't blame that on any beer, drug or tobacco company. If someone makes the decision to take it, they have obviously made that choice. That is like blaming all arsons started by gasoline on the oil companies.
The only solution is education. No, I am not talking about that farce called D.A.R.E. I am talking about old-fashioned parenting and parent/teacher conferences.
Let us not forget another major concern, curiosity. There is no cure for that. If drugs are glorified, which they are, people will want to have a piece of that for themselves. In that case no ban, no wall, no fence, can keep someone away from trying what they want to.

Meth is an EPIDEMIC in this country, and people are complaning about showing an ID for cold medicine??? take a look around, everyone knows someone whos is affected by drug or alcohol use. What are you doing about it? Its real easy to say its not my problem, lets lock up evey first time abuser and take their children away, stiffer punishment, thats the answer. REALLY?? Hows that working out so far??? Our jails and prisions are over crowded,85-95% are drug related. Our foster care systems are overloaded with cases and children. Are you going to take care of these children?? Its not just street people using this drug. It's not just teenagers. Its everywhere. It's your sister or brother, maybe your aunt or uncle, mother, father? how about your co-worker or employer?? Its destroying our family units and our communities. Maybe banning cold meds and having to show ID is a start but its not going to stop the problem. Constant drug education and awarness are needed, more residential treatment facilities are needed to treat those in need. Some do need to be in jail, but there needs to be better treatment there too and not just education.
Employers, instead of firering those workers, why not have a program to get them help? If you know someone in need don't just turn your head and wait untill they have lost their job, their home, their family, and possibly their life. Don't wait untill its too late. Do something today....Its going to take everyone to make this better. Lets all do our part to get our families and our communities back together. One life at a time. Don't wait for someone else to do it..

Actually, I have done some research. Actually, that is my career, a researcher. Addicts cannot make conscious decisions? Not true, they can make conscious decisions and they do everyday. There is a difference between a destructive addict and a functional addict. Sounds like you are hung-up on the Hollywood description of an addict.
We see them (addicts) everyday and you would never know it unless you followed them home and witnessed their lives. Don't preach to me about addictions when I myself have dealt with demons and still fight them off everyday like millions of others. I made a conscious decision to change and not use it as a crutch like the destructive addicts do. Nobody convinced me to change. You cannot help someone when they run away. The decision that an addict cannot make is acceptance. They cannot accept the fact that they have a problem and it is destroying their lives, even though they can see it coming. Remember that Denial is one of the first signs of addiction. Intervene all you want and it won't change a thing unless they make a conscious decision to change. This is hard to see for people who have not gone through it. Shellie, your intentions are good and I applaud your efforts and your input but it seems addictions will only be eliminated in a perfect world, but we can make great strides by educating.
