Will today's climate change report influence the way you live your life and use the resources around you?

I watched a recent documentary on global change that showed how we were going to go into a mini-iceage. The cause was from global warming and the melting of the ice pack. The fresh water melt was going to stop the current flow of warm water from the south to the cold water of the north and visa versa. The result was a catastrophic tempurature change in the northern hemisphere of some ten degrees colder. Looks like nature has a way of straightening out its own problems without our intervention. So no! I do not plan to change my life style more than I have. I am careful to not pollute the waters and soil. I recycle paper, plastic, metal, etc. Before I retired I used public transportation or car pooled. Now that I am retired I rarely drive more than once or twice a week.

Sincerely,

Anthony Barboza

Punxsutawney Phil says it will be an early Spring. That, plus Phil's uncanny resemblance to Al Gore, has me convinced to join the Global Warming cult.

You are asking the wrong questions. Ask why the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere occurs after the warming NOT before.

The atmoshphere contains approx 750 Gigatons of CO2, while the ocean contains 40,000 Gigatons in solution. As the increased solar activity has warmed the Earth, the increased outgassing of the ocean releases massive amounts of CO2.

It is the warming of the ocean that causes most(99.5%) of the increas in CO2 in the atmoshphere.

Does man contribute to CO2 in the atmoshphere? Yes, but in smmounts so small as to be below the error threshold in scientific measurments.

I think the U.N. should force the United States to buy enough Carbon Credits from poor countries, so that all those goat herders can afford to buy Pimped out Escalades.

Nature has been around, adapting and changing long before mankind. To think people can change something that will do what it wants, with or with out us, I find entertaining. I think nature will sort itself out.

WELL NOt only are they asking the wrong Question but the wrong people...why are they not asking if the munitinons dumps are going to filter the crap they spew...and all of the countless other corporations who dump trillions of tons of crap into our atmosphere???...world wide.....the only way people are going to choose to walk or bike to work is if they are forced.....luxury is not easily given up....and even if a small amount of the populous did there part, the rest of the people would do as they wish....and there are waaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy to many people to trust that everyone would only use there part and not more.....then there are the ones who think ill be dead in fifty years,so what do i care...and there are a LOT MORE OF THESE PEOPLE than we would like to admit.....we as a species cant even agree to no more war...you really think we can come together to solve this when the reality of it is so far away.......even if the united states did its part there are a few more countries out there who would see it as an opprotunity to move full steem ahead......And so the plot sickens......

Point the finger at the real offender: CHINA!

Quit trying to make me feel bad about my car when China is dumping poison into every river and shooting it into the sky.

I listened to your Global Warming report tonight and noticed that you failed to mention one very important part of the discussion that is occuring. Recently, one scientist brought up a vital point.
We have three choices to make: 1) Adapt 2) Mitigate 3) Suffer.
The earlier we adapt, the less we will have to mitigate which will mean the less we have to suffer.
We are the most "intelligent" life form on this fragile planet. Are we going to be the ones who destroy it? Ironic isn't it!
As for what I am doing.....I own a hybrid car, recycle everything I can, use flourescent light bulbs, and will start riding my bike to work at least twice a week.

At OMSI last Tues the state climatologists from OR and WA debated aspects of the new IPCC 4th Iteration.

The video and pdf files from that evening are now up at the OMSI web site.

I attended and posted my review of the debate on my web site,

www.sosforests.com

Look for 'The Great State Climate Debate'

The IPCC report has a yellow journalism stench created by an unholy trinity of media politics, agenda "science", and old-time religion. It stinks, will scare people needlessly, waste too many natural resources, and will prove to be as accurate as the "population bomb," "nuclear winter," or "Y2K Chaos." Should be (but won't) flushed down a drain before it does any more harm.

For my complete thoughts on the matter, see my post at http://www.sosforests.com

I think about Crater Lake, the remains of Mount Mazama, and Kratakoa (sp?) and the gazillion tons of gas and particles that were sent into the atmosphere on those occasions, and implied history seems to indicate there was a temporary global impact that soon went away. The Cascades are full of spent volcanoes, all of which had to make gas and particle contributions of magnitude, plus the rest of the world, includning the 6/7ths under oceans. I wonder how the science types measure the gas contributions to the oceans on a per minute basis just from volcanism? Nah...too many natural events, continuing, randomly, that contribute to make humans appear to be an ant biting an elephant. We ain't that powerful, tough, numerous enough. Cow farts, grandpa's farts, natural peat and coal fires, forest fires, volcanoes, none of which operates with a scrubber on their stacks, a catylitic converter, or the rain putting the goo to earth. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it might be a duck...this global warming by man is not a duck. It is just another in the growing incidents of science types making a run at politics because they get no real recognition in the lab or beyond their own arcane scientific journals. Maybe they should dress better, get some haircuts, and become Seahawks fans or gyppo loggers. That would garner some recognition and they still could work in the lab without having to sell their souls to the likes of the Sierra Club for a hero of the day button.

Since coming into effect February 16, 2005, the Kyoto Protocol has cost the world about US$296,000,000,000 and counting while the potential temperature saving by the year 2050 so far achieved by Kyoto is 0.003067900 °C and counting
(billionths part of one degree, which obviously cannot be measured as a global mean) and yes, that really does represent about US$100K per billionth of one degree allegedly "saved." Guess that means for the bargain price of just US$100 trillion we could theoretically lower global mean temperature by about 1 °C. (junkscience.com)

Kyoto is stupid, just plain stupid!!!!!!!!

The final word on Global Warming has been spoken by a consensus of our scientists - THEY KNOW!

It's time for round-the-clock public service announcements telling us all how to combat global warming - as individuals and as businesses. It's also time for a 100% American-made passenger vehicle that gets 60 mpg (not 28 mpg like Toyota Prius actually gets). It's also time for building codes - both residential and commercial - that require the use of solar energy, double-pane insulated windows, and greater insulation. And it's time for our government to take their heads out of the sand, face facts, and enact legislation to take effect immediately - not years from now when Bush is ready to stop placating foreign oil producers.

There are no 'opinions' involved in global warming. Humans are to blame! The end. Those are the facts... When was the last time you did research? Never! Also, no one specifically is to blame... It's not the US nor China, the red team or the blue team... IT'S EVERYONE! EVERYONE! People need to stop blurting out retarded ass 'statistics' on these blog things when they have no idea what they're talking about. Go take some high school science classes, hell, look outside. The people who are warning everyone about global warming are trying to HELP not hinder. If you're so stuck in your right wing ways, then you're a part of the problem. Don't belittle people that are trying to be nice. "Get hair cuts...get on suits..." blah blah blah. They have higher a IQ than George Bush... whom PAID SCIENTISTS TO LIE ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE. (Which was in the news last week by the way...) So, if its not real, why would he do that? It was f*%$#@g 70 degrees in January in Washington, DC, grow some balls and take steps to prolong the existence of the earth.

Well put Quinn. As a scientist, I can tell you about the wealth of information that is out to support Global Climate Change. Many don't realize that the damage is already done. Chemicals released prior to the Kyoto protocol still exist in the atmosphere. Many of these chemicals are catalytic in nature and seriously change the dynamics of our atmosphere. "Dynamic" is the key word. Our earth is in a constant dynamic flux, ice ages come and go. Gases are produced, released and adsobed in a dynamic fashion. One thing is likely for sure, an ice age will occur again. The key question is: how soon from now will this occur and how much influence did human activity serve in catalyzing the process?
I believe a "penny saved is a penny earned" and think this is also true with our environment. Every little bit helps.

roger said:

There is no such thing as "global warming". It's the same natural climate cycles this planet has had for millions of years. Just a ploy by socialist control-freaks to take away our freedoms. Global warming is not science, it's paid political propaganda.

Socialist Control Freak said:

Ok Roger, did your little conspiracy theorist gnomes tell you that? Why don't you help out by not posting anything on this again.

roger said:

Does anybody really believe these so-called scientists? These are the same bunch who told us in the 1970's that pollution was sending us into a mand-made ice age. They believe their inane computer models more than the historic fact that the climate naturally goes through warming and cooling cycles. They are nothing but alarmists who are trying to justify their own jobs and their own political beliefs.

After global warming is disproved in 20 years, they'll probably startup on the "we're heading into another ice age" bandwagon again. Give me a break!

Another way to manipulate us dummies that watch TV and the internet to get us to fall to there psyco babble that they love to sell. Have some faith folks, the Good Lord has bigger plans than global warming for us to end the world. But hey if you want to fall for that go right ahead. Then I guess you can pay for it also. If you think that US humans have that much control over things in this world then you have another thing coming. I have some beach front property in the Sahara for you to buy at a great price. Another great idea for the elite to dupe you buy like all the other things they put out there for US humans to grab a hold of to think we are mighter than the One above. My best bet is if you want something to buy and grab ahold of pick up the Bible that will get you alot farther than what they want you to think and believe.

I'm not pointing fingers. I'm saying there's hope. None of us are perfect, I even said that earlier. I said, "Everyone is to blame"... WE can change. So, you're telling me that because of what is inevitable in the United States (to buy crappy low priced clothes, and eat horrible food, in order to get by in society) is why I cannot express concern? I'm not allowed to talk about it? Make others aware that are willing to change their lifestyle a LITTLE, like I have, to help just that much more. I never said I was perfect, but I'm trying. It's not about politics is about how I feel about the environment. That's all I'm saying. There was nothing about self righteousness. Just, hey, maybe we need more mass transit? Leave the car home for a couple of days? Recycle bins on city streets? Little things. Why go around upset all day thinking that it's a democrat or hippie conspiracy and get angry, when it's just placing a bottle in a different colored container? Please.

Have a good day.

It seems to me, unpopular as the idea is, that our growing population contributes greatly to the problems of global warming and fewer natural resources.
I think that instead of tax credits to those with children there should be a tax increase beginning with the third child. Each person could replace themselves without a tax increase but those who want more would have to pitch in to offset the extra burden they place on roads, schools and natural resources. We could do this by attrition so as not to hurt those who already have more than two children.
Even more unpopularly, I think that if a person chooses to go to the govenment to request welfare or food stamps they should be required to show proof of birth control.

Dennis said:

I still say global warming is because the earth is being pulled in by the sun's gravity. :)Try and stop that. (99% joke)

To think there are going to be enough people that will willingly give up their cell phone's and their laptops and all their luxuries is amusing. The universe is a big place. We are not destroying the earth. The earth is just trying to shed us flea's. The earth will be around long after we as a human race are gone.

METROGROUP WORLD NEWS - "No snow in Moscow
12.01.07 07:44

Moscow in January conjures up images of a deep freeze, the locals shuffling around in traditional ushankas, the rooftops groaning under the weight of snow that’s been collecting since late autumn, and people struggling to start their cars in the frigid air as temperatures regularly drop below -20C.

That is exactly what you got last winter with some of the severest weather since 1940 making many of the locals question all the talk of global warming. A low of -31C on January 19 was only 1degC shy of the all time record.

What a difference a year makes. An unusually stormy North Atlantic and a very powerful jet stream has blown exceptionally mild maritime air all the way across Europe and into much of western Russia. December brought record warmth with a high of 8.6C on the 15th, smashing the all time winter record of 8.1C, set in February 1989. A brief colder spell at the end of the month brought some welcome snow and frost to the Russian capital – the locals, after all, are proud of their ferocious winters - but a renewed surge of warm air has pushed temperatures back to record levels this month.

On Wednesday the mercury peaked at 8C and on Thursday it was threatening to touch 9C - extraordinary values when considered against an average maximum temperature of -9C. The nights have been every bit as outrageous. On Wednesday night the temperature failed to drop below 5C, against a normal value of -16C and a whole lot closer to expectations in early May.

Winter Storm Blamed for 14 Deaths Across Plains
Saturday, March 03, 2007

MINNEAPOLIS — Fierce wind blew snow across roads and stranded hundreds of drivers on Midwestern highways Friday, as thousands shivered without power and airlines were forced to call off hundreds of flights.

At least 14 storm-related deaths have been reported since the snow began falling Wednesday, including a 10-year-old Wisconsin boy who died Friday in a car accident.

The storm left more than a foot of snow in some areas Friday. Even as the flakes stopped falling by afternoon, gusts of 40 mph prompted blizzard warnings and prevented major highways from reopening.

Officials at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport canceled 500 flights, blaming bad weather elsewhere.

In the Northeast, a storm dumped snow across northern New England, while areas to the south were left with a messy mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain.

Hundreds of miles of interstate highway in Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota remained closed for much of Friday, with plow drivers forced to pull off roads because of the wind-blown snow.

Renowned Scientist Defects From Belief in Global Warming – Caps Year of Vindication for Skeptics

--------------------------------------------------October 17, 2006
Washington DC - One of the most decorated French geophysicists has converted from a believer in manmade catastrophic global warming to a climate skeptic. This latest defector from the global warming camp caps a year in which numerous scientific studies have bolstered the claims of climate skeptics.

Scientific studies that debunk the dire predictions of human-caused global warming have continued to accumulate and many believe the new science is shattering the media-promoted scientific “consensus” on climate alarmism.

Claude Allegre, a former government official and an active member of France’s Socialist Party, wrote an editorial on September 21, 2006 in the French newspaper L'Express titled “The Snows of Kilimanjaro”.

Allegre wrote that the “cause of climate change remains unknown” and pointed out that Kilimanjaro is not losing snow due to global warming, but to local land use and precipitation changes. Allegre also pointed out that studies show that Antarctic snowfall rate has been stable over the past 30 years and the continent is actually gaining ice.

“Following the month of August experienced by the northern half of France, the prophets of doom of global warming will have a lot on their plate in order to make our fellow countrymen swallow their certitudes,” Allegre wrote. He also accused proponents of manmade catastrophic global warming of being motivated by money, noting that “the ecology of helpless protesting has become a very lucrative business for some people!”

Ronnie Amyot said:

UN science says that even if we capped CO2 emissions, we can not stop the warming for the next 1000 years. Then this is the end of the world. Maybe not, C02 levels have had a 1:1 correlation with temperature the past 400,000 years. We need polar ice to melt because it causes a deep ocean current that brings the nutrients at the bottom to the top so the sun can turn them into algae which eats CO2, gives us 75% of our oxygen and is the start of our food chain. Warm surface water is forced back to the poles and melts more ice. This would continue except for the fact that the poles do not melt evenly. One ice sheet in Antarctic picked 11,500 billion tons between 1992 and 2004. Weight shift will tilt the axis and the poles will be further from the sun during their respective summer. When global temperature was over 61.5 F in 3500 BC and 1050 AD, we had good times, but famine killed millions in the 1800's with 57.5 F.

Roger said:

Two new reports cast doubt on the manmade global warming theory and instead point to another cause for the recent warming of Earth — changes in the sun.

One report from National Geographic News asserts, "Simultaneous warming on Earth and Mars suggests that our planet’s recent climate changes have a natural — and not a human-induced — cause, according to one scientist’s controversial theory.”

Data from NASA’s Mars Global Surveyor and Odyssey mission in 2005 disclosed that the carbon dioxide "ice caps” near Mars’ south pole had been shrinking for three consecutive summers.

Habibullo Abdussamatov, head of the Pulkovo Astronomical Observatory in Russia, says the shrinking provides evidence that the current warming on Earth is being caused by changes in the sun, according to the National Geographic article.

"The long-term increase in solar irradiance is heating both Earth and Mars,” he said. "Manmade greenhouse warming has made a small contribution to the warming seen on Earth in recent years but it cannot compete with the increase in solar irradiance.”

The other report offers a mechanism behind the changes in the sun — variations in its magnetic field.

Compiled by scientists at the Danish National Space Center, it maintains that the Earth’s climate is strongly influenced by cosmic rays from exploded stars.

The cosmic rays help make ordinary clouds, and high levels of rays and cloudiness cool the planet, while lower levels of radiation lead to milder temperatures, according to the Danish report, which is cited by Marc Morano, communications director for the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment & Public Works, on the committee’s Web site.

"Cosmic ray intensities — and therefore cloudiness — keep changing because the sun’s magnetic field varies in its ability to repel cosmic rays coming from the galaxy before they reach the Earth,” the Danish report by Henrik Svensmark, head of the Space Center, explains.

Roger said:

As Al Gore’s movie “An Inconvenient Truth” becomes mandatory viewing for many U.S. school children and nears becoming the “official truth” about global warming, it comes as most welcome news that an absolutely gripping film rebuttal has made its international debut, much to the chagrin of true believers in man-made climate change.

Last week, the UK’s Channel 4 premiered a 75-minute film entitled, “The Great Global Warming Swindle.”

Through interviews with prize-winning climate experts and others, this masterful documentary explains the origins of global warming alarmism; debunks claims of man-made global climate change; exposes the motivations of organizations, scientists and activists sounding the alarm...

The entire film, which is creating quite a stir among tens of thousands of web viewers, can be viewed online at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4520665474899458831.
