Did President Bush convince you that his plan to send more troops to Iraq is the right decision?

I support the plan, alternatives are even worse. It appears the outspoken critics that have been so vociferous against any military effort in Iraq have contributed significantly to bolstering the morale and determination of the suppliers and supporters of the insurrection forces. The verbal battle in public and legislative circles so well played up by the press has convinced the enemy the USA are decaying within and will collaspe. Sad to say the US effort is being defeated by our own people. Can we clean their clock, establish stability or will we see the battle field closer to home?

I think it is totally absurd. What about the Baker commission's suggestions? How much did we pay for that and he totally ignored all suggestions. This president is totally out of touch with reality. More than 70% of Americans disagree with this but he chooses to do just the opposite of what the majority want. He also made threats against Syria and Iran, this is very dangerous. Almost 4 years and still going, chaos if we leave, what do you call what's happening now. There is so much waste through Halliburton and others and he wants to waste more. We have become so blase with death over there, that when we see it on the news we just go on with our day. This is a totally unjust war, morally and ethically. Get Out!! Commander in Chief, what a joke.

Same ole, Same ole! We have been down this road before, and each time things just get worse. The problem is this: A Muslim country occupied by a non-Muslim army. Until we change this scenario, the violence will only continue and get worse. We are the problem, let's admit it. We must work toward a U.N. sanctioned peacekeeping force composed of troops from Muslim countries. We need the help of other countries under the U.N. umbrella. Until we get over this fear of losing this war, we cannot not move forward. Let's face it,this war is already lost. There is no possiility of a military victory. When will we wake up to the lessons of Vietnam!

No more war. Things would be better if we send the troops home. As in the the book 1984 Bush thinks that war is peace. We need a new president sooner then later.

I do not support the plan. Sorry but I have a real problem in sending more of our troops over there, when my son who was very recently deployed for his second tour too Iraq, & in a hurry to get him there just before Christmas, but once they got thim there, they didn't know what to do with him & he had no work for over a week, & basicly twiddled his thumbs. He's now again waiting for his crew to get back possibly another week. This has me very concerned & removed all doubt weather we should be sending more of our troops there, Now thats' a waste of money, send him home for petes sake! I think It's time, Bring em home.
His only comment sofar was the morale, & hasn't been there long enouph to know if its up or down, until next update. Army Mom

It is absolutely amazing to me that the majority of America is not understanding the significance of our presence in Iraq as immensely important to our own freedoms and way of life. We can not afford for this region to be taken over by Iran, or Syria. If we were to pull our troops that is exactly what would happen. I support the President's plan. Is it easy to see more troops go over there,NO. We can not lose our resolve in bringing Iraq into a country that is self sustaining and "Freedom with Liberty" loving. The problem though is not that we are a non-Muslim country in a Muslim country. The problem is that the Iraqis do not know how to fight for their freedom because of the control that Saddam had on them for so many years. The fighting that the Sunni's and Shite's are involved in is for control not freedom. Wake up America. Quit being blinded by your hatred of our President. It seems there is less outrage for the terrorists than that for President Bush. That is simply frightening to me.

The urge by some Congressional members to pull our troops out of Iraq seems rather strange in that the USA still has 37000 military personnel in South Korea since the war was over in 1953 and we still have 27 miltary sites still in Germany and that war has been over for 60 years plus sites remain in Japan(10) and Italy(7) and personnel in the Neitherlands,Portugal,UK,Turkey,Spain, etc. Why isn't there an urge to pull or troops out of all those places?Anybody have an answer?

If President Bush had served in Vietnam, perhaps now he would know the folly of his consistently flawed decisions. He has never risked his life and has never had to sacrifice anything precious to him. Now, he asks those who have already risked their lives and sacrificed so much to go into harm's way yet again. Shame on him!
Dennis said:
Don Allison, my answer to your question is that our troops aren't being killed and wounded in such numbers as in those places you mentioned. Paul Olsen and Cindy, it's good to know that there are still people that think for themselves. Just because Bush choose to send more troops doesn't mean he completly ignored other options. Don't people realize that there are going to be people that don't agree with any decision the next president makes. Sending more troops into a hostile situation is never an easy thing to accept.
Ramos said:
The President's so-called plan is in fact no plan at all: it's insanity. There have been several troop "escalations" since the beginning of the war, and none of them have had the desired effect. What makes the President, his advisors, or any of his supporters believe that this latest surge would be any different? The supporters who have commented above have done little more than to display their apparent massive ignorance, and would be well advised to do a litte -- just a little -- independent research: the American mass media is ignoring many components of this story that are freely available in the international media. Case in point: the Iranian Oil Bourse. (Haven't heard of it? Please do some reading.) This escalation isn't about some empty platitude, like "protecting our freedom"; no, in short, it's about power and money. How many more thousands need to be killed for such empty goals from which none of us stand to benefit? It's madness, plain and simple.

To answer your question Cindy the reason we still have those troops there is so we have quick access to deploying our troops from every part of the world and since we rescued or took charge of these countries we established bases there. All of our troops that are injured in Iraq are treated in Germany, faster than flying them all the way home and half of our Marines that are serving in Iraq are being deployed from Japan. If Bush puts his twins in the service and sends them to Iraq, particularly to Baghdad, we'll support the war and his plan. If he wants the respect of the people, SEND THE TWINS!!
How does Freedom and Democracy relate to an offical who doesn't even listen to the people. The people have spoken, and our leader chooses not to listen. What is more insain?..Repeating the same action and expecting a different result, Or a government FOR and BY the PEOPLE in which people have no say any more on how we conduct our selves as a society. Bush's move here is almost like that of a dictator, "We know whats right for you and the world, and elections clearly won't help you...we will do what we want."

I agree with the above, but think the ante should be upped: I'll support this war the moment every single crazed right-wing politician and propagandist (O'Reilly, Hannity, Kristol, Savage, etc.) enlists and ships off to Iraq with the Bush twins. Heck, send all the neo-cons -- it's their war, not ours. If they believe so deeply in this war, then they need to get their butts over there and fight it. We want ACTIONS, NOT WORDS!
It sounds as if the country has gone crazy!!! What about finishing what we start?? No I am not happy about being over in IraQ..but good lord..If we have spent all this time and money..screwing up..dont you think it is our responsability to pay for the fixing too..and this Constant Whining..my kids in the military...oh im so aginst our goverments decision making skills whine snivel whine snivel....What about you and letting your kid sign up to get free training and then paid(weakly)under that administration??? what the?? People need to think before they act..then they need to be held accountable..no one forced YOUR kids to signup...YET!!!!NO i dont want more troops over in IRAQ....but if that is what the governing bodie decides to do im behind it because thats what needs to be done...right or wrong..our goverment is responseable for what happens there....or what dosn't happen there..WHen my life style changes...THEN i will be up in Arms...but untill then...Im going to remember all the team players that made this Iraq thing happen...and come to vote time i wont make the same mistake twice...

I'm not sure I completely understand the position taken by Johanna (above), but if the issue is "finishing what we start", then my question is simply to ask "at what price?" Many right-wingers argue that we can't withdraw from Iraq, because so doing would mean that over 3000 US military (and tens of thousands of Iraqis) would have "died in vain". This, of course, suggests that we should continue to send others to their deaths to provide further validation for those already killed in this unnecessary war.
In economic terms, the real cost of this war (as argued by Stiglitz, et al., taking macroeconomic costs into consideration) may well have already surpassed $1 trillion in April, 2006. Who's going to pay for that? And how many further billions need to be sunk into this morass, with no ostensible profit? (Except, perhaps, to contractors such as Halliburton and Blackwell.) No, we need to get out NOW, pay billions in war reparations, and support the UN in its attempt to restore order to the chaos we've unleashed. We should also impeach Bush AND Cheney and ensure that they, along with their cabal of neo-conservative war-mongers, end up in jail for war crimes.
John Fallau said:
I agree with Ramos to the last t...If you took all of the money exhausted on this war you could have made every American millionaires. What plan? Just keep sending in more and more, setting up fortifide camps as we go, driving the enemy away? It won't work. The British tried that in 1776. It's like an endless game of Risk, with an endless supply of soldiers; more targets for insane groups that have weapons. Can anyone remember life before 2000, when Clinton was President? The biggest news was Monica Lewenski. Clinton had things under control until he got caught with his extracurricular activities. Sure Saddam was a brutal dictator, enslaving a helpless population, but the only real way to deal with this world-wide problem of evil governments is through leading the world by example, as we always have done before. That's why people wanted to come to America, so that they can have the good life. However, because of narrow leadership, we are on this insane mission to rid the world of corruption. That's really not our job, and we cannot afford it. These last six years seem like 600. However, this is history in the making, rather it be logical or not. History always seems to bring out truth along with the facts. The fact is, the neo-conservative plan failed. The truth is, we as a society are getting smarter. Let's hope these backwards third-world countries can finally get a clue. One of these days people in North Korea will wake up to reality, because a whole nation cannot remain blind forever. Same for Iran as well as Iraq. Even in our own country people are so brainwashed by blind beliefs and traditions that they cannot comprehend infinite knowledge, like oceans on Europa and the possibility of millions of civilizations in this galaxy, which is one of trillions of galaxies in this current universe. How pathetic to live in such primative times, yet we have a bond as citizens of this planet to grow up and be a responsible species. Perhaps we should ask the whales?

I support the plan as there are no alternatives to stopping the spread of terrorism. Having read the responses of those who want us to pull out of Iraq, I would like to point out that no one has offered a plan to thwart the most serious threat to our nation that currently exists if we lose this war by withdrawing our troops - as it will only embolden those who wish to see us eliminated from planet earth. Note that our war with terrorists started in 1979 with the Iran Embassy Hostages and continued with the Beirut Embassy & Marine Barracks 1983, the Pan-Am flight in Scotland 1988, NY World Trade Center 1993, Saudia Arabia Towers Military complex 1996, US Embassy Kenya 1998, US Embassy Tanzania 1998, USS Cole Yemen 2000, NY World Trade Center 2001, and US Pentagon 2001. During that time period 1981-2001 there were over 7,000 terrorist attacks worldwide. THIS HAS TO STOP. I would ask of you, if you had been president of the US during the 9/11 attacks – would you have said “enough is enough”? Please tell me what you would have done. If you said that you would have only fought back in Afhganistan, then you must surely realize that when you fight a war, there are only winners and losers. To be a winner, you have to destroy the enemy’s will to fight, his bases, deny him food, supplies, arms, medicine, safe havens, and outside support from those nations willing to further terrorist activities. To get out of a difficulty, one must usually go through it – that is a hard fact to swallow, but there is no other way - other than to capitulate and pray that the terrorists will go away. They won’t and you know it.

This is all about oil and god and it's 2007 not 1612. No one is whining, people are sick of death. In reply to Don Allisons post on that the US still has military sites in Europe. The reason those posts were there weren't for the German war, but were there because of the Cold War and many of these bases are being used to support this war. Your list of countries that have bases is however incorrect. There was an airbase in The Netherlands, but that one (Soesterberg) has been closed quite some time ago and the US is reducing/closing bases in Europe constantly. However the the airbase in Vicenza (Italy) will be expanded and troops for that will be relocated from Germany to that base as it is one of the 'tactical' airbases to cover northern Africa and the Middle East.

If the US and Britain withdraw before the Iraqi governement is stabilized and is able to control the terrorists, there is now a very good chance that civil war could turn into a major regional war as the Saudis and Jordanians threaten to come in on the side of the Sunni community, (which they have indicated they would) and the Shia militias in turn look to Tehran and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard for backing. As this civil war edges towards regional war in Iraq and the Gulf, the Arab powers have just thrown a large fly in the ointment - and it's a nuclear one. At the last meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Saudi Arabia and its allies discussed openly for the first time the necessity for the Gulf Arab alliance to begin developing its own nuclear industry - for civil, and peaceful purposes, of course. But why would Arab kings and emirs, sitting on the largest commercial fossil fuel reserves in the world, want access to nuclear know-how, except to create a bigger deterrent to protect their interests in an ever more unstable region? Why does Iran need nuclear capability? And what would we do? Let it happen and pray that everything bad would go away?

ask yourself what we are fighting for? and if the answer is to stop possible future terrorism, then aren't we dying for a speculative cause? or maybe just to save some nickels at the pump? we probably wouldnt be needing so much oil if that money was going toward researching and developing alternative forms of energy, which is how ever many billions now.

Bush's Iraq plan is rediculous and ineffective. Looks like Bush cares more for his false pride than he does for the American people. Perhaps he has forgotten that the only enemy we have is terrorists. Our reason for being in Iraq, Afganistan, etc is actually our dependence on foreign oil. If we cease that dependence, we can stand back & just let people fight their own civil wars and allow Israel to defend itself as it needs to. WE need to bring all our service people home & insted, build up our intelligence services - SEPARATED from the disasterous department called "Homeland Security."

Pres. Bush plan would speed up the process of Iraq's rebuilding only if it doesn't turn into another Vietnom. One way to do that, is to drop leaflets telling the muslems' if you don't want your non-combatants hurt than do something about those terrorist using you and your mosque as a shield. This time we will go where they go to root them out-this mean taking the equation out of the picture, "human shields, mosque".

President Bush is a true American Hero and his plan makes sense. There are just a small handful of terrorist thugs supported by Iran and Syria who are causing the problem. The Iraquis love us and want us there to protect them from the terrorists.
Increasing troop levels in Iraq by 20,000 brings the level back up to where we were in 2003. That level didn't work then so why is it going to work now?
This is another contrieved scheme by the worst President in my 63 years of age. He will provoke Iran and Syria into a major middle East War bringing on Armageddon whether his God likes it or not. He is our counterpart of an Emom or Mullah, without care or worry about the consequences he is bringing on to the World. Bye bye American pie......
I think his new plan is as bad as the original. I hate to be selfish but there is nothing in it for us and we have not concentrated on that factor in a long time. Same with the Army we have deployed all forces from Korea and replaced them so the people here don't know the real numbers. George is unquestionably the stupidest president we have ever had and we are now paying for it because we elected him. Congress needs to step in and take charge or we will end up losing alot more troops especially since we are now being rushed through training to be another one of Georges numbers. Maybe George lives vicariously through his troops since he didn't have the guts to serve in a war himself! If Bush puts his twins in the service and sends them to Iraq, particularly to Baghdad, we'll support the war and his plan. If he wants the respect of the people, SEND THE TWINS!!
Sherry & Steve
I agree with Ramos to the last t...If you took all of the money exhausted on this war you could have made every American millionaires. And the part about Bush and Cheney being impeached we need more people like you because I thought I was the only person that felt this way. Halliburton is a joke and to outsource your own military which is what has happened is the last straw. Impeach today pullout tomorrow
Bush has created far more terrorists than he has killed. There is no way to win this war that was a mistake in the first place.
It's time for diplomacy - I only wish Bush knew what that meant......
Give Iraq back and bring our troops home. Iraq would be better off without us.
Peace!
Bush is the next Hitler, trying to start WWIII. This new plan is taking us in that direction. Have you ever watched V for Vendetta - rent it and you will understand.
Bush should be hung next.
I think he refuses to face the fact that he should not of got us in the war in the first place. He acts like a spoiled brat that thinks he can do no wrong. How would he feel if his daughters were over there. I have no respect for him. Why can he lie about getting us in the war and the things he has done but when Clinton lied about his affair that only hurt his family and was no ones business but his and his family's they went for impeachment. I think he and Cheney should both be impeached before they can do anymore harm to the people of the U. S. A
I agree with Senator Hagel on this one.
This is Bush's Vietnam.
We need to pull out NOW.
Pulling out of Vietnam never hurt our country at all. It was staying that hurt.
NOW is the time.
Pull out all the troops and stop the madness.
Well it sounds a little like liberal land around here...Lets put the trouble we cause off on some one else...ie:the u.n..or other country's....we, if (we) have any control over the gov..allowed bush to bomb iraq...where was all this itching and whining when he was making his speech on the 9/11 site to go and bomb the crud out of IRAQ???you all think your smart...so tell me where does osama bin ladin live??? yeah thats right not IRAQ!! but lets see what happens when,he not only bombs the wrong country but dosen't even go after (full force) the guy who actually did the 9/11 deal....no I am not a self proclaimed brainiac...but even i could see what was going on...so WE yes WE...as a country..allowed him to do what he wanted as long as we got a sense of payback....hmmmm...where was the concern then?? LET me reiderate my previous statement....We need to take responsability for our actions. right or wrong...We need to fix it....it isnt causing any discomfort here at home yet....so untill it does i wont complain...we may be further in debt...but its a small price to pay for such a big SCREWUP...and we need to be held accountable, using our own military, our own money, our own sub contractors, because it is dangerous and we shouldn't exspect anyone else to clean up after us....

This is Vietnam II and the Boomers have turned their left cheek to all of this nonsense. How about we go kill some more people for oil? Sounds like a good idea! George Bush should be tried as Saddam was. Rumsfeld makes Erwin Rommel look like a Cabbage Patch Kid, yet everyone's got their Playstation 3's and their X-Boxes. Hello people, AMERICA is the problem! We are in this war because of 9-11, and 9-11 happened because of our lousy foreign policy and military bases in other countries. Do you know how many bases Canada has in Europe? 0! This is all about oil and god and it's 2007 not 1612. No one is whining, people are sick of death. We should be spending billions and billions of dollars converting cars to not use fossil fuels and find a paper alternative. But that good ol' boy George is in office still, YEEE HAAAA!!. Makes me sick...
Mr T, this war has created more terrorists then it was supposely 'erradicate'. This is not an enemy you can defeat by 'conquering' a country.
I support President Bush's plan to increase troop forces to secure Baghdad. 90% of Iraq is secure, and in much better shape than before the war. The entire problem lies within the Baghdad area.
Alongside with Iraqi troops, we should show no mercy to Sadr and the terrorists who want to bring down the Iraqi nation. This plan is the best hope to bring peace to the Middle East.
I cannot believe the lack of understanding of this war. It has amazed me to talk with people strongly opposed to the Iraq war and yet, when asked, they do not even know where Iraq is located. They are the first ones who would grieve at the loss of lives on our soil if we gave the terrorists an open door to the USA. This war is about preservation of our freedom. It is about time we, as a country, stand behind those risking their lives for each of our freedom. How demoralizing to our troops to have these political fights. This war is not an easy war but rather a very difficult war and, YES, I am totally convinced it needs to be completed. It is time we unify in support for our own good!
Absolutely not. Get out of Iraq asap.
I SUPPORT OUR TROUPS. Whenever I see someone in uniform or with some other indication that they have or are serving our country, I politely approach and say... "Thank you for your service to our country."
I am tired of the President insinuating that if we disagree with him, we are not supporting our troups. The president got a strong message in the election that his presidency does not have the approval of the country.
It may seem odd but I actually see the logic of sending more troups. I understand that concentrating on the areas so that the Iraqi locals forces can attempt to secure ONE area. Is the right idea. It might be a little late.
I want him to stop accusing us of not supporting the troups because we do not support his policies.
Our referendum was on his job performance not on our men and women who have sacrificed so much in this effort.
AND what about the reservists who have lost their jobs when they come home and are now finacially handicap. They already gave their all for our country and now they come home to hardship.
That is a travesty! If you want more tax money from me...then create a program to help those returning reservists who had served valiantly and need to come home to their jobs so they can return to their lives.
I SUPPORT OUR TROUPS.
I do NOT support the administration.
If you want to see how many nearsighted goofballs there are in this country just read some of the above messages. These same anti war people would not have supported General Washinton in 1775, President Lincoln in 1861,FDR in 1942,or Eisenhower in 1944. They probably would have supported Chamberlin in 1940. Just read some history goofballs.
Bush seems to think this is a matter of optimism vs. pessimism. No, Mr. Bush, it's about facing reality. I wonder if he has read the book Fiasco, or even heard about it. I expect he would say he has, but I find no evidence that he has. The potential scenarios outlined at the end of this book are absolutely chilling.
I THINK THAT WE ARE IN IRAQ FOR THE OIL AND NOT 9-11. IT IS JUST THE PRESIDENT'S PLAN AND WAR I NOT LIKE THIS PRESIDENT. LET SEND THE CLINTON AND THE PRESIDENT'S FAMILY TO IRAQ AND LET THEM BE PUT IN A WAR AND SEE HOW THEY LIKE TOO SEE THE DEATH THAT COMES WITH THIS WAR.
Our president has come up with a Press Release of action but has not convinced me of any PLAN in place. It further demonstrates that he is willing to ignore the very people that he is supposed to represent " because he knows better." ( He just can't tell you because of "security" ) His administration has made a mockery of our Bill of Rights & now he feels fit, as Commander in Chief, to put our Armed Forces in harm's way against not only the people of this nation but in a fashion that insults the various treaties, negotiations & hard work of his predesessors thoughout the world. This "Anti-War Goofball" believes that it is the intent of every Diplomat & Commander to be "Anti-War". I guess some people just like war. Pity... Bring the finest miltary back to the mission they were meant to accomplish; DEFENDERS OF PEACE.
9/11, 9/11, 9/11. . . the message has been lost by the hatred and opposition to the President of the U.S., who has, by his strong response to the terrorists, kept them from attacking us, in the U.S., these last 5 years! Have they not noticed? They live under a strong delusion that we are not at war - well, guess what. . .WE ARE AT WAR and that means we use whatever means we have, or we lose. Sorry to the Harry Reid's + Bush hatred - attacking my president, (he needs to come clean with the millions on his very shady land deals!), Carl Levin (not my president), and Nancy Pelosi, (also not my president), unless they understand who the terrorists are, we are doomed - plain and simple. They all make huge salaries while undercuting our Commander and Chief who, with "congressional approval", went after the terrorists. Now they try to present every move he makes as being unilateral and stupid. We cannot win against the terrorists while the Democratic party enemies sabotage his every move. They are our homegrown enemies and hurting our military every single day as they also hurt our president.
To all the "Bush haters". Bush is just the puppet. There's a bigger picture that needs to be seen.
Yes, I support the plan. We have been so duped by the media's spin on the war that we are not able to think for ourselves. I don't know why anyone would think we could pull out, come home and all would be fine! We have to stand strong, fight hard and win.
When the cat is away the mice dance on the table .. just look at what China has accomplished. We are so focussed on Iraq that we're missing the bigger picture here.
When Bush Took Office, Gas Was $1.46
WE ARE AT WAR................That alone may make gas go up!!!you think???near sighted or not its true.......not to mention the 101 other reasons..IE:kawait not being under british control anymore,UAE having contol over the amount of crude that is refined.......so on and so forth.....I absolutely agree with who ever it was that said to delve into the history on this.....TRY not to be so narrow MINded....look at the whole ugly picture...........not just the side that suits your arguement.......question?? why do you think it is that clinton tapped into our national oil reserves.....hhhhhmmmmmm????
"no, seriously, why did we invade Iraq?"
I support our President.... In fact, if we were allowed to "untie our hands" by lowering the "rules of engagement" this war would have been over a long time ago!!
I think that the President needs to remember that it is not his loved ones over there, it is OUR KIDS,OUR HUSBANDS,AND OUR WIFES! He is sending them over there to die. And,unfortunatly,we are the ones that pay the ultimate price. I feel we did not go over there for nothing, but I feel that we made our point long ago and we need to bring our family and fellow americans home. They need to enjoy the freedoms that they put thier lives on the line for every day.
Who ever agrees with the president needs to commit suicide. They are the religious radicals that got us in to this situation. They aren't in the military and they aren't dying, maybe they should.

No support from me. Impeach him!
